Rob Ukrop spent more time with that team than any other in his pro career. He retired as a Kicker. I wouldn't doubt that he's still involved in some manner. |

I'm very sorry to see Matt Spear leave. Although our men's soccer team has never been a national or regional power, Matt has done a remarkable job fielding competitive teams in both the SoCon and the A-10 given the scholarship limitations. We have collected a few ACC scalps along the way, too. The current team has some very good young players and should challenge for the A-10 championship next season. My one hope going forward is that the new coach will recruit more internationally.

I've really enjoyed the culture of Matt's teams and the type of people he has produced. And, there have been some big wins to hang our hat on.
That said, I'm excited for this next chapter - for him and for the cats. 18 years is a lifetime.
I sort of disagree with the earlier post about us being on a national / regional stage. I know we're not forgetting the '92 final four run, but we may be forgetting the impact of hosting the final four for those 3-4 years.
People used to come to Richardson Stadium to play us (and this only right at the start of people building Soccer only Stadiums like Klockner at UVA) and you could tell they were looking forward to playing on the field that hosted the final four when they were in highschool ... Besides, other than having a crown, the Richardson field, then, was one of the best pitches in the country. _________________ 2040. 3rd East. 2nd Center. 4th Little. 302F.

The next head coach, with a level playing field, would have a great opportunity. How much we'll try to level the playing field is the big question. _________________ "McKillop is a gentleman. He could have played 'name that score' if he so desired."---St Joe's fan |

Sure, Davidson soccer and Charlie Slagle were on a national/regional stage 25 years ago, but that was under a different coach, who was the NCAA Tournament Committee chairman at the time and later became president of the NSCAA. What I wrote is that we've never been a national/regional power, and I stand by that. In the 26 seasons since 1992 Davidson has made the NCAA tournament field twice. I also reiterate that I think Matt has done a remarkable job with the limited resources he has been given, and I am sorry to see him leave. I would have loved to see what he could do with a full allotment of scholarships. _________________ "We should've thrown our number 7 pitcher against Davidson......"
