Some people watch things and don't understand what they see. Some of them are fans of Winthrop. http://winthropfans.boards.net/thread/102/next-davidson-12-4

Liking what I'm seeing from Bates. I think that's where Ekwu's minutes are going. Hopefully he can earn some of them back.

Carter's aggressiveness got him in trouble tonight. Love the energy he brings; just needs to keep it on the good side of the in control/out of control line.

It is a pretty tough crowd around here. Winthrop shot 45% from 3 in the first half. That's their game. Regression to the mean in the second half.

The Dusan spin move and the cross court hook pass from Luka were two of the prettiest plays of the season.

This team is good, y'all. Many ways to beat you. Roles are being established and cemented. Gonna pay dividends down the road.

That was 20 of the quietest points you'll ever see from Kellan.

PS. The student turnout was pretty good. Some left before the fun in the last few minutes, but they came just before exams and deserve kudos for that.

I just saw 77's comment about the free tee shirts. Some students may have made a U turn after collecting a shirt, but many sat in a seat for at least the first half.

PPS to rbarney. Nathan was clothed tonight.

You sure about that? I thought I saw him in uniform.

citycat means clothed as in "not nekkid." He was, indeed, in his uniform. Bates played well, Duca was great, and they had no answer for Luca. Coach Kelsey has a lot of guys his own size. They'll be good in the Big South, bad outside of it.

I went to a Sunday afternoon bass trombone recital at Winthrop about 1990. A former parishioner was working on his master's degree. I parked in a space marked "Visitor." They gave me a parking ticket. I never went back to that campus again.

Just got back from the game.

Odds & Ends

1. I sat lower in the arener tonight and I thought my late arrival made me miss free hat night. 5 minutes later and after a mild headache set in I realized no free hats. The 5 gentlemen in my row with the ball caps were fighting the corona of the LED lights. Yikes they are bright. Fans may have to adopt eclipse viewing protocols. Shocked

2. Luka impresses the hell out of me. He has great hands and probably the highest basketball IQ on the team. His footwork for a big man is superb. His first half hook pass and give & go cut pass were more signs of talent bubbling up to the surface. It is great to watch teams now have to re direct their lay up slashes to the bucket. He goes straight up most of the time with two hands and we finally have someone who is making opponents change their shots inside. I think we will see a 30 point game out of him in the next 30 days.

3. Defensively yuk. I still haven't seen the Cats make an opponent change their attack. I still think we need to go back to our zone from last year and pick up guards early to burn some clock time. I think we would be well suited to play 50% man & 50% zone.

4. Why do we not run out of bounds plays under our hoop to get a quick bucket any more? It seems like we are content to just lob the ball to the top of the key and get it inbounds.

5. Coach has had great success coaching up his teams as the year goes on. This team is still only scratching the surface. Sprinkle in a little D tonight and we probably win by 30.

This mentions why Nate didn't play and mentions knee bursitis for Kellan-- https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/college/article222640570.html

With about 1:10 left in the first half, Winthrop called their use it or lose it timeout. They’d been shooting lights out from 3. We came out of that timeout in a zone. It was absolutely brilliant. There is no way they’d discussed attacking a zone in their huddle. We played it for 2 possessions then went back to man.

I’m sure we’ll play zone at some point. I bet it shows up when we (and the opposing coach) least expect it. In the meantime, we aren’t going to create scouting tape while racking up double digit wins.

Cats are 8-1 as they head into exams. Who at the beginning of the season would not take this result and run with it?

Nate will be needed, especially when we play teams with strong big men. Winthrop had shooting big men, but no bruisers.

Strange. That Observer article didn’t mention the all-time series record between these programs at all. 🤷‍♂️

Feels odd to say this given all the pre-season Kellan hype (huge Kellan fan), but this is JAGs team and that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon. I questioned a few of those deep threes in the moment, but dude is a killer. He’s the one we want to have the ball in his hands when we need something to happen.

[quote="citycat"]Winthrop has played at one of the fastest tempos in D1 so far this season. They scored a lot against Warren Wilson and another sub D1 team, but they intend to run and gun against D1 teams, too.

Nych Smith started college at Fordham, but left before he ever played against Davidson. He went to a junior college and then to Winthrop. He shoots some of his jumpers like Lloyd, later World B., Free, kicking a leg out to create contact if a defender is close by. Refs are supposed to call fouls or issue warnings when shooters do that. There was a great example in the 2nd half when he took a 3 pointer in front of Section 9.

He flopped on other 3 pointers.

They put Bjorn Broman, the 6' guard on Kellan in the first half. In the 2nd half, Kellan wisely drove on Broman. Broman had 6 rebounds.

They played 4 guards most of the game. Luka and Dusan took advantage of Winthrop's lack of height.

Luke had 4 assists. One was a great pass to JAG who took off from the 3 point line for a layup. Another was a pass to Luka for a downward thrust. It was on Channel 3's highlights.

In 2007, Winthrop was 22nd in the final AP poll. They beat Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. They were an 11 seed, which is impressive for Big South team.
