Quote: | Davidson Coach Lefty Driesell added a ballet course to his preseason training this year, getting his inspiration from watching ballet star Vladimir Vasiliev rocket four feet straight up into the air. "It can't hurt," said Driesell. Anyhow, the Wildcats, with sophomore Mike Maloy scoring 38 points, beat Bucknell 91-70 and VMI 80-73. |

They also had actress and I believe dancer Diane McBain there the year before visiting the team. |

This might just be a story told too many times to be true but I believe Lefty tried ballet exercise as a way to train his team in the 1966-67 year. As I think I rememember it was the wife of the French Professor Dr Tom Williams that was the ballet instructor.
My memory is that it didn’t last more than a practice or two at most because the ballet positions Ms Williams attempted to get us into were not possible in that era of no stretching and warm ups before practice. I remember there being a couple of pulled muscles. I seem to remember Huckle tweaking one of his Adonis like calf muscles.
I presume others on the team like Mike O’Neill, Dave Moser or Tony Orsbon could verify (or not possibly) the story.
It is certainly true that during Lefty’s Davidson years I don’t think there was any idea or superstition that was so hairbrained that Lefty would not consider it. I am sure that Terry Holland and Gale Catlett spent a lot of time keeping the most unhinged ideas from being introduced as something to try. |
