The things we are most thankful for probably don't relate to sports, but this is the Davidson basketball board so I'll bloviate about what I'm thankful for in that context.

On Thanksgiving day thirty years ago, I was pretty worried that Davidson would forever remain as irrelevant to Division I basketball as the program was on that day. If you weren't, you weren't paying attention (or were a lunatic like wftc, who never let objective facts get in the way of his sure and certain hope of the program's resurrection). They were extra bad, and had just lost their affiliation with the Southern Conference so they were extra bad on an obscure island. Their best player was hurt, and he would transfer as soon as the season mercifully concluded.

The program's resurrection can be traced to one guy, but Bob McKillop hired and recruited a whole lot of people who bought in and have all done their share. It's probably fitting to note that one of his walk-ons is currently the AD.

How often do you worry about whether Davidson is going to field a competitive team in any given season?

How many times in recent years have you said you went to Davidson and then fielded a question about whether Davidson is a four year school? [That happened to me all the time when I lived in Reno in the late 70s-early 80s.]

When news of a basketball program scandal breaks, do you think for even a second that Davidson might be involved?

When the season ends with the final loss, do you spend a lot of time wondering whether better effort or preparation might have led to a different result?

I never worry about Davidson basketball, because I know every member of the program is worrying about it enough. In the narrow niche of following our alma mater's hoop team, we have a lot to be thankful for.

All that said, if someone turns an ankle Saturday I will lose my mind over the impending fall of the sky. The Kool Aid addiction epidemic is a problem we can blame on Bob McKillop.

Among the vast number of things I am thankful for are you guys and this board. I was pleased to meet even more of you in Charleston.

I am thankful that my exploring has not ended, but I've arrived at one of the places I started and can continue to know the place for the first time.
