wildforthecats and I made our annual bet about how many wins we'd see this year. This year's bet was that he buys if we have 4 or fewer wins, we buy our own at 5, and I buy wftc's beer if the Davidson football team wins 6 or more. We stand at 4-1 and there is no way that we are going winless the rest of the season. I guess there is still some small chance that we could only win 5, but I'm calling it early. wftc understood how much better we could be with the coaching change. And I'm thrilled to lose this bet. _________________ "McKillop is a gentleman. He could have played 'name that score' if he so desired."---St Joe's fan |

The coaching change was great but the players deserve a lot of credit as well. They have picked up and embraced the offense. I expected to see tons of turnovers this year as they were changing their style. That has not happened.
I expected the option to be a lot of fun but I had no idea that we would be passing so well at this point. Last weeks 4th quarter drive was special.
We need a big turn out this weekend.

85 knows a lot better than I do, but it seems like this kind of offense can only pass well if the defense can't stop the run without the kind of commitment that leaves them vulnerable to those passes.
A look at the passing stats from our Wing T days tells you that defenses could drop the hammer on the run without committing extra players to the effort. |

The key is to get the safeties and LBs constantly committing to run support. That should allow our athletes to get open. Even if they are putting 8 in the box and stuffing the run, passing should be open. This offense is always looking to get a numbers advantage at the attack. We don't need the best athletes but smart ones that execute. Fortunately Coach Nichols recruited some good athletes and Coach Abell has put them all in the right places.
In addition, QB Phelps has been putting many passes right on the money and receivers have been doing a great job of catching the ball.
Our Wing T was not very good. Coach Farrel was never very good in putting the proper players into the right positions. There were 4 or 5 players walking around campus on Saturday who could have made the offense work. _________________ "They were energized by this move to the A-10. How could you not be?" Ed used to tell us the problem with the Wing T was our execution. There were a fair amount of good players in the mix when I started in 1981, but we did lose a lot to attrition due to Ed's less than stellar coaching acumen _________________ Let's go Mens |

What about the "barking dog" vs Boston U game on 10/10/81? |

The Terriers were angry the same dog got onto the field twice during critical plays.
The refs were like the Inspector from Raleigh who liked the dogs. That was the famous "Giraffes always looking out for themselves." episode. |

I always thought that one of Ed's biggest problems was making sure players were in the right positions for their skill set. I was amazed over four years some of the depth chart choices he and his coaches would make. Small full backs, small linemen, etc. Many of these players could have played solid roles but not in the positions they were slotted. _________________ "They were energized by this move to the A-10.
