This is a pretty good warning about getting off the beaten path anywhere south of the Rio Grande throughout Central America. I went to Merida with my family decades ago and didn't feel particularly safe even there.

My heart goes out to Coach Andrew and his family. I just can't imagine what they're going through.

I hear what you mean, but on the other hand, his family says that their son's death shouldn't deter people from exploring our world. An inspiring interview in the face of tragedy here: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/crime/article221781485.html

Worth pointing out, too, the top-of-the-fold story on the Observer is about 27 people getting run over in Charlotte last year. So, you know.

I don't want to get into an argument in the face of such a devastating loss. However, I don't think we, as a nation, begin to comprehend the dangers that so many people are fleeing south of the border. I remember a Peter, Paul and Mary song about El Salvador:

"If you took the little lady for a moonlight drive
Odds are still good you'd come back alive
But everyone is innocent until they arrive
In El Salvador"

I don't think much of that danger has abated in the last 50 years.

I don't want to come across as disagreeing with rbarney here because ultimately I agree. But I have some insight that may be helpful. My wife and I attended Davidson with PBA and became very close when he lived with us for a year about five years after graduation (he and I both worked for the college and my wife and I rented out a room in our house in Huntersville). I remember well when he started to develop a deep interest in exploring Mexico, Central and South America. He and I talked about the dangers he may run into; I'm quite risk-averse and was, of course, concerned. He knew what he was doing but didn't want the danger to deter him from getting closer to the people, culture, and landscapes he so loved.

Yes, rbarney is correct. No American tourist should blindly go off the beaten trail in many of our neighboring countries. PBA wasn't so blind though and in many ways he led his life like we all should. I'm just very sorry that his ended as it did.

Godspeed, PBA. Love to his father, Gary, and all who knew him.
