My recent discussion about Parris Island reminded me of my own experience there back in the mid 80’s.
At the time I was selling the hardware of a big company, and they had an installation at Boot Camp. The Corps did not like the idea of the Boots having cash, so they implemented an early version of a local debit card system. These cards could be used on base to purchase geedunk (snack food) and more important things like shoe polish and Brasso. The cards would be closed out on departure, when they were allowed currency and coin again. Departure day also involved a lot of other administrative things such as travel arrangements and checkout.
The sales reps at my vendor asked me to go over and observe the process to see if we could improve it and hopefully make a little money. So I made arrangements to go over for the next departure day.
The week before there was a Rugby Tournament at the park about 5 blocks from my house. My old buddies from the UGA team were down playing, so I went over to watch. I thought it would be impolite not to stay for the after game party.
Rugby parties are not generally noted for their elegance. This one had the standard amenities, a random spot on the grass and a large tub filled with ice and cans of beer. Several cans of beer.
Just to fit in, I managed to perform up to Rugby standards in terms of consumption. So when it came time to walk home, I was just a bit, uh, “Impairedâ€.
I cut across a church parking lot when I noticed they had taken down the gate in their fence, so I could save a few steps. Unfortunately, in my lowered state of awareness I failed to notice they had replaced the white picket gate with a steel cord about knee height.
This resulted in a short acrobatic performance in which I did not do a good job on the landing. That in turn resulted in a bloody gash on the bridge of my nose. Undeterred, I stumbled the last few blocks home.
Meanwhile, The Boss had begun to worry a bit and drove over to the park but could not find me. Naturally, she had locked the door, and naturally I had not bothered to take my keys. She came home to find me slouched on the front porch leaning back on the front door with blood trickling down my face.
She unlocked the door and I crawled in, while she kicked me a few times to speed me up. (Actually, I made that part up. The kicking part, I mean.)
A few days later I headed over to Parris Island for my visit. I wasn’t bleeding anymore, but I had a large conspicuous scab on the bridge of my nose. In those days I was still trying to look like a legitimate businessman, so I was dressed up. When I got out of the car at the base, I realized I would have to stand up straight and not put my hands in my pockets. I was still in the Reserves so I could remember those things.
I wasn’t sure exactly where to go, so I wandered around a bit. There were groups of recruits being marched around. The DI’s gave me lots of strange looks when they saw a guy with a military haircut, a business suit and a huge scab on his nose.
When I did find my potential customers, I told them it was a rugby injury. I think they bought it.
Go Cats!

Some rest and relaxation should have helped. Let's take this one.
Kudos to the football team for their fine season. |

We'll take any win, but please, Lord, let there be no injuries...and if we could, maybe a lot of points. Amen |

Bob, I've enjoyed your Parris Island stories. It's quite a place. My son endured the Rat Year at VMI, then spent his summer vacation at Boot Camp at Parris Island. After his 2nd year at VMI he went to Camp Lejeune for combat engineers school as a Reservist, and after his 3rd and 4th years he went to Platoon Leaders Class 1 and 2 (essentially, OCS) at Quantico. After his commissioning he went to The Basic School, followed by Infantry Officers Course. He ranks then in order of physical stress as IOC, then Boot Camp, then TBS, but he ranks them in order of emotional stress as The Rat Line followed by Boot Camp as a distant second. _________________ "We should've thrown our number 7 pitcher against Davidson......" I find the whole initial military training dynamic fascinating. The various versions are different, but all really the same. _________________ The best thing Davidson ever did was to admit women to classy up the place. |

So far, scoring has been hard to come by...again. Five point in five minutes for Cats. Thankfully, NEU has only four. |

Any possibility that Kellan's haircut has sapped some of his super-powers? Seems as though Steph got a close buzz during his Junior year, and struggled for a few games. |

Well, now that could be the team's problem, right there. |
