Wednesday, 11 am. ESPN+. I wonder if there will be any screaming kids at the game.
#210 at #312. 66%. 66-60.
This is game two of our Big South schedule. This team beat us last year in Davidson, but lost to graduation are three starters who combined for 33 ppg, 17 rpg, and 85 made 3-ptrs.
The Bulldogs do return 3 of their top 5 in minutes played -- Ky'Asia Stanford, Savannah Plentovich, and Carley Plentovich -- who combined for 25+ ppg. Both Plentoviches are threats from 3-pt land. And there is a grad transfer from Miami (FL), Neydja Petithomme, a 5-8 guard.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have a new coach, Alex Simmons, who played at Tennessee under Pat Summitt. Her first game as a head coach? A win at P5 Florida this past Tuesday. G-W also has an easy win over USCAA-2 Warren Wilson to its credit. They lost at home today to #224 Morehead State, 84-69.
FWIW... (it includes the 63-pt win over WW)... 40% 2FG, 33% 3FG, 75% FT. Plus 2 on the boards, 18 topg.

I'll take the "over", Derek.
Reminder... 11 am start.

Same starting five for us, reportedly.
I watched the 1st half of their game with Morehead State, a half in which G-W did not play well. Mostly five out, with lots of high ball screens by their big for their guards. MSU mostly switched or fought through so I don't know if their big can pick-and-pop. MSU did not leave the twins to help, which was smart. Like last year, they will also hunt transition buckets, including transition 3's. Man-to-man D.

1st qtr, 3:27, 8-7, G-W. Getting looks, just need to make more of 'em. Sarah with 4 pts.
End of 1st qtr, 12-8, G-W. Both teams are 3-15 from the floor. They're 6-6 from the line, that and 5 Cat turnovers are the difference in the game. _________________ ...coming out of the murky, dreary jungle of untutored mediocrity. |

2nd qtr, 4:50, 21-17, G-W. Sarah has 8 pts and 10 boards. Kianna with 6. They're attacking us with the dribble with success. Also with pick-and-roll, as we're hedging the high ball screens. Katie has 3 fouls, Justine 2.
Double-double for Sarah D now.
** If you're listening to Derek, they had to reboot the broadcast. You might need to refresh your browser.
Halftime, 28-24, G-W. Happy to be down only 4. Defense better those last five minutes. Sarah has 12 pts and 10 rebs. Kianna with 6. Katie and Justine have 2 pts between them. _________________ ...coming out of the murky, dreary jungle of untutored mediocrity. |

3rd qtr, 4:34, G-W, 35-31. Still getting outplayed. Still down only 4.
3:04, 37-34. Katie with 4 fouls now. Cats starting to exert full-court pressure.
End of 3rd qtr, 41-39. Cats still not in any kind of rhythm, but we did lead briefly for the first time this game.
** Justine just grabbed a rebound, that's her career 400th. _________________ ...coming out of the murky, dreary jungle of untutored mediocrity. |

4th qtr, 7:00, 43-41, Cats after Cassidy converts a pair. She and Kianna both in double figures with 10 each.
Crap, Kyla just went down, grabbing her knee. 4:35 left, tied at 43, Cats to inbound after the timeout.
2:45, 45-43, G-W. Kyla is fine, she's back in the game. Justine converts a pair, we're tied at 45.
2:00, Katie with the layup, 47-45, Cats.
56 secs, tied at 47, G-W at the line... make, make, down 2, 49-47.
Good look for Justine from the corner but she misses. 31 secs, 23 on the shot clock, G-W to inbound, we're down 2.
G-W gets the runner, 51-47. And 1. 52-47. 17 seconds.
Katie misses a long 3, G-W to the line.... make, make. 54-47.
** Final, 54-49. Cats were 3-27 from deep, 16-57 overall, 7 assists, 22 turnovers. G-W was more aggressive at both ends. _________________ ...coming out of the murky, dreary jungle of untutored mediocrity.

Sarah D had 12 points and 15 rebounds. Cassidy also with 12, plus 5 boards. Kianna had 10, including all three of our 3-ptrs.
G-W didn't shoot well either. But they won points-off-turnovers, fast-break-points, and they were plus 8 on steals. We won the boards by 8.
Next up... App State visits Davidson this Saturday. Fresh off barely having won my "over" bet on this game, I'll wager that we'll be a lot sharper for this next one. _________________ ...coming out of the murky, dreary jungle of untutored mediocrity. |

When you are 3 - 27 from deep, there is a question of whether the coach should have pushing them to get the ball inside. That's a lot of wasted opportunities! |

Hate to lose a game like this. I am convinced that our coaching staff tried to coax the best effort out of our team today. The season is a journey. As with the men, I am confident that we will be playing out best ball at the end of the season, learning a hard lesson or two along the way. The future is bright for this program. |

There were a couple of questionable ones, but most of our 3-ptrs were good looks at the basket. Just not falling. Mama said there'll be days like this.
We played good D and rebounded well the entire game.
In terms of eligibility/game experience, we've started two juniors, two sophomores, and a freshman. First player off the bench the last two games was a freshman. With Justine's minutes apparently limited, we're still a young team. Having Katie in foul trouble and Kelly not available didn't help either.
Expecting a smoother offense and fewer turnovers and mental mistakes against Appy. _________________ ...coming out of the murky, dreary jungle of untutored mediocrity. |

They were 39% against Queens and 32% against Charleston Southern. Not particularly impressive against either one. When you are shooting 11%, I would think the coach would begin to look for another strategy. |
