Yale played Cal, the state university in Berkeley, not the Davidson hoopster, in the annual game played in China. Bill Walton was not commentating, so the audience was spared hearing hundreds of positive comments about the PRC.
Yale won 76-59, which seems like an upset to me. This was the first time a Pac 12 team has lost this game. A Pac 12 team plays a team from another conference.
Yale took all 18 members of their varsity squad. One of their starters is Trey Phills, the son of the late Hornet, Bobby Phills. A Cal walk-on is Jules Erving, Dr. J's son.
Maybe Yale took such a large squad so they could continue to play if some of their players were arrested were arrested for shoplifting. |

Bill Walton is the absolute worst. Well, right up there with Vin Scully.
Bobby Phills was my favorite NBA player as a kid, I was nine when he died. I lived in PA but somehow got all the Hornets games on the radio. I still remember that day, and asking my dad why the game was canceled. Come to think of it, I used his jersey number all through middle and high school.
Cal is very bad. |

Hes a menace. I remember when I was in Davidson I thought it was fun to listen to him cover the odd west coast game every once in a while. Now that im back on the west coast and routinely getting pac12 games hes covering its intolerable. Id rather listen to pure crowd noise or watch in silence. |

tennis,
You were listening to Hornets' games on WBT-AM, a 50,000 watt clear channel AM station that can be heard from Cuba to Canada.
WBT carried Davidson basketball games off and on from the '60s-mid'80s. Several Davidson students in my era said they learned about Davidson through those broadcasts. Charlie Slagle was one of those students.
WBT radio appeals to senior citizens. Before they broadcast the Hornets 1.0, Henry Bogan was their night time celebrity. When they carried the Hornets' games many senior citizens became huge fans. The previous night's game was the principal topic of discussion the next day on the air. Nearly all the road games were broadcast on WCCB-TV, channel 18.
Some of the lack of success of the Hornets 2.0 has been due to their lack of having a strong presence in the local media.

When my parents and I realized they could pick up the Davidson games on the home radio, it was a big plus in choosing Davidson. I remember Brickles telling us Synder's parents listened to the games in Canton. |

The antenna orientation was so strong north and south that WBT wouldn't reach Shelby after dark. We had a local transmitter relaying the signal to us. _________________ Μεγάλη ἡμÎÏα εἶναι ΛÏγξ |

I learned a good bit about directional AM signals while studying for the test to get the third class broadcasters license for WDAV. |

They made you do that? I was a dj with a 2-hour jazz show on a weeknight and they just showed me what dials did what and said, "there you go!" _________________ “Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.†— Jeff Bridges as The Dude in "The Big Lebowski" |

I think they gave some of us "temporary licenses" so we didn't have to take the test. Bucky and I had Thursday night 10-12. I wonder if the signal reached Hatties? |

I am reminded of "Wont' Get Fooled Again" being played by a notoriously famous duo of DJs during the heat of the "Kick The Brick" movement.
10 watts of tower power.
Mark Wylinski ('76 ?) was the boss of the station and gave us all booklets to study, then hauled our asses to charlotte to take the test. I thought we were in the big time. He got really pissed at one DJ (on our freshman hall) who would just slap on a "Yes" album and take a nap. |

"Kick The Brick"
I recall seeing these attached to dorms when I came to the W&M game during the 1975-1976 season. |

pdxcat77 took the test in Memphis in the summer and I took it in Winston-Salem the same day. We passed, but never hosted another show.
I was very proud of the certificate the FCC sent me. |

Thank you! Those were simpler times. |
