I don't remember too much about that season, but I remember way too much. We were scary bad. But we had a great home court atmosphere. _________________ "McKillop is a gentleman. He could have played 'name that score' if he so desired."---St Joe's fan |

Massey says #349 at #59. 97% chance. 58-80. Dartmouth ain't holding us to 80.

"But we had a great home court atmosphere"
Johnston Gym was awesome. My first game their wasn't until I was 16 years old. The crowd was so incredible, I was unable to hold back tears.
I have two reoccurring dreams: 1) We get to play one game a year in Johnston Gym every year. 2) Mike Maloy somehow is in his twenties again and has one year of eligibility remaining and plays for the Cats.
Can you imagine if the old gym was around now? If you recall, no drinks could be taken into the arena. If you couldn't climb stairs you were out of luck. I LOVED IT though. The complaints would be enormous. |

And, in sitting on the bench at least, you ALWAYS felt like the place was packed w rabid student fans. |

In '76-'77, we played the Iron 5. The starters averaged 38 minutes a game. There wasn't anyone who could contribute off the bench, although Rich Perkey proved to be a valuable player when given a chance later.
The season before, we brought in the vaunted Super Six, a recruiting class that was going to turn the program around. We got worse. 4 of the Super Six left on their own or were told to leave. Recruiting was hampered by the coaching changes and losing.
In addition to the Dartmouth win in Charlotte, we beat The Citadel and William & Mary in consecutive games in Johnston Gym. Those were the high points of the season.
We played Brown twice in addition to playing Dartmouth. Maybe Dr. Spencer thought we could get into the Ivy League through the back door. We were 2-1 against the Ivy League. |

..and now you couldn't have the wildcat mascot swing on a rope tarzan style back and forth across the court. (but i think that stunt met its own demise actually) (was his launch point the balcony ?) |

I don't know what the spread is, but I'll take the Cats and the over. Under for 75% of Belk being full. |

And just for fun Friday night, there will be a special guest on the bench, who is a classmate of mine and citycat He won a bid on a 'prize' at a recent access2success fundraiser.. He gets to sit on the bench and actually call a play for the team Friday night. |

I loved playing in that old gym. It had to be a mother-#$%^&*#$%^&* for other teams. It was loud with the students right on top of you. The wood floor was bouncy yet dribbled pretty consistently. (As opposed to the dead spots at Coliseum temporary floor).--tragic when they replaced it with the rubbery crap.
I remember being very disappointed in 2000, when at my 25th reunion I went over to the gym and it had become the Student Union. I went inside but the gym was just a memory. Ahh the sweet smell of rancid jock straps mixed with the chlorine odor of the pool. Gone. |

Don't know how that act ended, but yes, it began with a step over the balcony railings. |
