There is a bit of divided attention around Threadstarter World Headquarters tonight. Along with the all-important Hoops competition, there are some other contests going on that are well covered by internet resources. They are not as crucial as our game, of course, but the staff would like to keep up with both to some extent.

Here at the Threadstarter World Headquarters Command and Control Center, we are particularly well suited to covering multiple internet activities at once. The following is not bragging, but more a testament to the packratism induced by my borderline OCD.

Although I am very pleased with ESPN+ on the big screen, that venue limits me to only two screens, the TV and the first floor solarium laptop. That’s fine for a game, but tonight I need more.

Being in “da biz”, I have many opportunities to collect old computers. When my customers replace computers, they realize their old ones have very little cash value, so it’s not worth the hassle to try and sell them. Also, since I deal with businesses, their computers are full of data they really don’t want out on the street. So it’s easiest to just give them to me.

I clean them up and then use them myself or find other homes such as nonprofits or schools. I make it a point not to get money for them, as that would be a bit ungentlemanly.

Tonight, so as not to put on airs, I’ll limit myself to 5 screens. 3 are on the main box. I have a customer whose husband is a gamer, and when he updates his system, she gives me the old one. This one, the second I’ve gotten from her, has serious video capabilities so I have 3 screens on it. I actually paid money for the center one, the 29 incher. Of course, I had a bunch of Dell promotion points, so it only set me back $53. The other 2 screens were freebies.

I have another PC & screen setup (free of course). It works, but has some kind of intermittent hardware glitch that makes it unsuitable for serious work, but it’s OK for gigs like tonight. The original owner is particularly demanding and intolerant, so she gave it to me and bought something else. (I won’t tell you her name but her initials are “Pink Hair”. ) Screen number 5 is an old laptop a customer outgrew. It’s good enough for web surfing.

I have another laptop and a PC and a couple more monitors in reserve, but I’m too lazy to set them up. I think 5 is enough for now.

Some of you may remember that the Command and Control Center is laid out to somewhat resemble a Navy ship’s bridge. All the screens would make sense if it were a modern vessel, but back when I was at sea we didn’t have all that stuff. Anyway, I’ve outfitted it with a wheel, a barometer, a fake sextant and a pair of binoculars. There is also a lamp that looks like a port running light and a palm tree on the starboard bridge wing. (A Brick Red to the first one to recognize that reference.) I also hung my pompous Navy hat on the bulkhead.

The most recent addition is a compass. I found it in a second hand store and mounted it close to the wheel. It’s a good compass, very stable, doesn’t swing around a lot. I steer a steady course, after all.

The Boss looked at me kind of funny with that one.

I walked by her a few days ago and she was talking on the phone. She said something about a “competency hearing”. She hurriedly hung up when she saw me.

Maybe she’s going to surprise me with a hearing aid for Christmas.
