Men's golf had an excellent fall season. Team-wise, they are currently ranked 84th on Golfstat, which is the highest I ever remember us being. We were in that ballpark in spring 2013 but not sure we were better than 84.
Additionally, Jack Lang was incredibly consistent in his 4 tournaments with three 3rd place finishes and the other result another solid finish. Jack is ranked 31 (!!!) on Golfstat individually which is most def the highest we've ever had someone ranked there.
Results and Notables:
@Marshall: T3rd/15
Jack Lang: T3rd -5
Clayton Tribus: T12th -3
Viraj Garewal: T14th -2
Alex Ross: T21st -1
@River Run: 3rd/13
Jack Lang: 2nd -7
Viraj Garewal: T10th E
@West Virginia: 2nd/14
Jack Lang: 3rd -4
Hoke Carlton: T8th +4
Viraj Garewal: T11th +6
Alex Ross: T21st +10
@Dayton: 1st/12
Alex Ross: T2nd -2
Jack Lang: T14th +4
Hoke Carlton: T18th +6
Viraj Garewal: T18th +6
Along with Jack, Viraj Garewal has been incredibly solid as a freshman. Senior Hoke Carlton and last year's A10 ROY Alex Ross have also been steady. Frosh Clayton Tribus (son of Cliff for the basketball fans) also played well at Marshall and Dayton. Those 5 were our lineup for the last three events. Clayton was an individual at Marshall. Senior Kevin Carlock was the only other guy who has made the lineup (first tourney at Marshall). And this strong play was all without senior Mike Blasey in the lineup who won A10's individually last year.
While the schedule hasn't been the toughest we've had in recent years, a 44-5-1 record is stout against anybody. I believe the bubble for making regionals as an at large is usually somewhere in the 62-72 range on Golfstat. If they can continue this play with a stronger schedule coming in the spring, they could definitely compete for an at large spot.
Even if that doesn't pan out, the Cats would certainly be the favorites at conference at this point. VCU and Richmond are the closest in ranking at back-to-back spots at 150 and 151. We were 4-0-1 head to head against A10 teams in the fall, with the tie coming to Dayton (182) at Marshall.
A lot to look forward to in the Spring. Go Cats! _________________ I feel the pressure, under more scrutiny.
