I just wanted to congratulate Coach Abell and his staff for a tremendous turnaround. Coach has won more conference games in 3 attempts compared to our last guy who won one game in 5 years. It goes to show you that if you embrace the culture you are handed, take care of your kids and make them believe that you truly care for them, anything is possible! Our last guy worried about the negatives and ran our program into the ground, I only wish they would have made the change earlier. Don’t look now but Coach Abell May eclipse our previous coach’s win total in on year depending if you count the College of Faith! Look foraward to Saturday and working toward #6! Go Cats! |

I agree with the kudos for Coach Abell and I too thought the coaching change took too long.
However, lets give Coach Nichols credit where it is do. Nichols did recruit some pretty solid athletes to the Wildcats. This pool of talent has allowed the program to turnaround so rapidly. Coach Abell came to campus with the perfect components already in place to run his brand of option. _________________ "They were energized by this move to the A-10. How could you not be?" From my experience working with both high school and college athletics, I know that good and creative coaching can make a world of difference with the same talent. I just hope Coach Abell has the same dedication to Davidson College as a Bob McKillop, Charlie Schlagle or Dick Cooke. |

I would say yes here, but IMO we need to keep showing Coach we are dedicated to him and his program as well. |

Coach Mike Houston progressed from HC at Lenoir Rhyne to the Citadel and now James Madison. He reportedly has a compensation package near $500,000
Assuming Coach Abell has great success as the Wildcat Head Coach, we are going to have to get creative to keep him around.
Sign his son now with a long term deal!! _________________ "They were energized by this move to the A-10. How could you not be?" McKillop said. "The tree is filled with a lot of presents." |

And Charlie Slagle, too. _________________ "We should've thrown our number 7 pitcher against Davidson......" Post by Tar Heel baseball fan 16 minutes into the game. |

Totally aligned with you on the coaching change taking too long.
Where I am not aligned with you is that Nichols deserves credit for the team's success this year. You are 100% correct in that Nichols recruited pretty solid athletes to campus and had a decent pool of talent. But the fact that he had that for 5 years and never yielded any level of success near what the team has already achieved this year--doesn't that look poor on his part? If he had all this talent but never did anything with it, why should he get credit for another coach having a great season with his recruits in Year 1? And much less, a great year in Year 1 of a totally different style of offensive football that normally takes years to fully implement.
The team's success this year is first and foremost attributable to the tremendous job Coach Abell and his staff have done, how our players have bought in, and how excited they are to play for him every day (I can tell you that last part is the biggest change with the new regime). Coach Abell and his staff, and our players deserve all the credit in the world for what is happening this year, and the credit should be limited to them in my opinion. Whether or not you agree with me on that, what I think we can all agree on is that this team is exciting to watch and I can't wait to see them continue to succeed on and off the field. |
