This doesn't inflict the same pain as it did prior to October 2004 when Kevin Millar had a confident air prior to game 4 of the ALCS.
I watched the playoff game on 10/2/78 in the TV Lounge of Van Hecke-Wettach Hall with a bunch of Democratic Socialist Yankee fans who ridiculed the Red Sox for having no one better than Bob Bailey to pinch hit against the Goose down two in the 7th with Boomer standing on 2nd.
There was a great Sports Illustrated article about the playoff game that was written 20 years ago which was enjoyed by everyone but Bob Bailey.
PS. The Red Sox came from 3 1/2 down with 14 games left to force the playoff game. |

There are 2 playoff games tomorrow afternoon. The Brewers play the Cubs and the Dodgers play the Rockies. The losers will meet in the NL Wildcard game.
It's a good time to be a baseball fan with time on your hands and cable tv. The playoff game in 1978 was traumatic. |

Dorp is going to Milwaukee for at least 2 games.
Today is 10/2/2018, the 40th anniversary of the '78 playoff game. This is akin to the 40th anniversary of the Ides of March in 4 BCE to Caesar fans. It took a gang of assassins to take down Caesar. All the Sox needed were Mike Torrez, Bob Stanley, and Jim Rice.
So far, it hasn't been a bad day. |
