|
|
The Kannapolis City/Town Council approved a new downtown ballpark for the Intimidators last night. The ballpark is scheduled to open in 2020.
The ballpark is to be surrounded by apartments and hotels, similar to the Grasshoppers' ballpark in Greensboro.
Maybe a college tournament could be played there on a weekend before the minor league season begins. Perhaps the A10 Tournament, too. |

I thought work was already underway. I go by the site on my way to campus. |

The story was on WSOC TV's noon news and WBT radio's afternoon news. Maybe some work was being done to clear the site, but now construction will start.
Having the park ready for the 2020 season is ambitious. If the downtown ballpark isn't ready they can probably use their current ballpark of 85. |

Their old park is my least favorite in minor league baseball. No soul what so ever, just a concrete bowl. When I first went their in 1995 it was in the middle of fecking no where, now it’s in the middle of suburban Charlotte, though the demographic shift hasn’t helped attendance. Bonus demerits for the classic bait and switch of claiming that they would charge for parking “just untill parking lot paid for†then of course never stopping. Young graveline would park at a church and walk 10 minutes to save $3 _________________ If anyone disagrees with anything I say, I am quite prepared not only to retract it, but also to deny under oath that I ever said it |

The current ballpark was placed in Rowan County because Cabarrus County was dry. The team wanted to sell beer at the park. Kannapolis is in both counties, but the downtown and the better parts of town are in Cabarrus County. Also, the ballpark had to be 35 miles from the Knights' stadium near Fort Mill. That distance has been waived.
It is aggravating to drive to a ballpark that's located in the middle of nowhere and have to pay to park. The aforementioned Charlotte Knights' stadium was that way. Especially when you've been given free tickets for donating blood or contributing to United Way. |
