In 1969, Davidson beat Furman 77-14. There were many records set in that game. My brother was the freshman cheerleader for Furman that season. It was an elected position.
In 1979, Ed Farrell's best team played Furman late in the year. A win might earn us a spot in the 1-AA playoffs. We lost 63-55. Coach Farrell was quoted in Sports Illustrated, "We thought 55 would be enough".
Guilford's first string scored 5 tds on our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string defenses in the 2nd half. I think Guilford scored 9 tds on 14 possessions. Did we ever punt? We had no turnovers. |
We lost a fumble. We punted at least once. |

We punted twice and had a fumble. Late in the game, we played on defensive backfield on one series and a different set of defenders on the next series.
We had 3 completions of 70+ yards. |

Right now Guilford has 250 yards rushing, 364 yards passing, and 289 kick return yards, resulting in 47 points and a 30 point deficit. Bizarre! LiveStats also says the Quakers have given up 203 yards on 4 penalties!?!? |
The penalty yards have been corrected in the box score. _________________ "McKillop is a gentleman. He could have played 'name that score' if he so desired."---St Joe's fan |

I checked and the 56 point half was in fact in 1969, the Tangerine Bowl season. Final score of that one was 77-14.
The SID office will have fun with this one. Lots of records -- total offense, rushing offense, rushing yards per carry, points, combined points... |

Back from the record setting game.
First off, the Cats offense really looked good. Guilford is not bad. Davidson has some serious speed and they are executing the option very well early in the season.
Several of our backs can take the ball to the house if they get a small opening. Coach Abell recruited well, several freshmen looked very talented tonight when they got some playing time.
Coach Abell needs to get some more players to help the D. Guilford passed at will.
There was a decent crowd at the game for a game that was moved 48 hours earlier.
We just may sneak up on several Pioneer teams this year if we can stay healthy.
Go Cats!

Sure it does if you’re scoring TDs rather than advancing ten yards at a time. _________________ Μεγάλη ἡμÎÏα εἶναι ΛÏγξ |

This is on the main ESPN website, not the College Football website.
This helps take the sting out of the 69-13 Catawba loss in '75. John Chancellor read Catawba's stats on the NBC Nightly News later the next week.
Reading about this game beats watching the Weather Channel to see if they report devastation on Oak Island. (Long Beach to us geezers) |

After watching the last two games it's easy to conclude that we are better offensively. We do have some serious serious team speed. And the option is very fun to watch.
Offensively the timing is better every game, the O-line is figuring out the blocking schemes, and our backs and slots can flat out run. Phelps and Byrne can scoot as well. As I know from being on wishbone teams for eight years, the option can really open up your vertical passing game as we showed last night.
We will score points this year.
The question is can we stop anybody? Our defense looks horrific. I know we have a few injuries (hopefully guys will start returning), that we are young (they better mature quickly), and we also had a defection or two. Still, we haven't improved during the course of the early season as far as I can tell.
And, our kickoff team is pretty bad. We just can't give our Pioneers foes short fields or we will be in big trouble. I'm sure the staff will figure out something.
The next two games will be very instructional to the fans. _________________ "I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter."

I went home that weekend, so I missed the game. When I returned to campus Sunday, pdx77cat showed me the stat sheet.
LR had an All American RB who missed the bus to the game. He didn't play until the 2nd half. Because he wasn't in the lineup at the beginning of the game, they passed several plays. When they discovered their backups could run at will, they dropped the passing and ran every play.
I've been typing this last night and this morning with one eye on the hurricane coverage.
