2 pm, Thursday, Dec 28, in Orlando.

#240 at #94. 9% chance. 66-51.

UCF is 3-3 against the Massey top 100. Best win was at #55 UC-Davis. Worst loss was at #215 Samford.

Three common opponents already. The Knights lost to Mercer at home by 9, lost to Elon at home by 14, and doubled up Gardner-Webb on the road, winning by 35.

Tough team to figure. They have shot only 78 three's in 12 games, making 20 of them. By comparison, we've shot 232 three's. They've scored 70 or more points only once, so not an offensive juggernaut. Balanced scoring -- three averaging double figures, all guards, plus a 6-1 F who averages 9.9 ppg. They are +4 in rebounding, +3 in turnovers.

Our two game win streak has given us a nice bump in the Massey charts. In their A10 rankings, we've moved up three spots. Used to be #11, now we're #8... by a whisker.

Found a UCF game online. The Knights are very good defensively.

They played mostly an aggressive matchup zone, tight D on the ball, guarding the 3 pt line, sometimes jumping passing lanes. Quick hands, deflections, steals, runouts. They also used a 1-2-1-1 press often, trapping when the ball crossed mid-court. We will need to be very sharp when we have the ball.

Video finally up, Cats trail 6-0, 3 minutes in.

Cats, man-to-man. UCF, pressing, trapping, retreating to that "nasty" zone.

6:09 left, 10-0, UCF, who have made all five of their shot attempts.

End of 1st qtr, 14-10, UCF. Both teams having trouble scoring with their half court offense. We have 8 turnovers. UCF has 5.

2nd qtr, 7:37, 17-14, UCF. Kianna has 5 off the bench. Kyla with 4 boards. Still tough getting good looks against the UCF zone.

Halftime, 28-22, UCF, after the Cats had tied it at 22.

Justine and Kianna with 5 apiece. Mackenzie has 4 plus 3 rebs. Kyla has 2 plus 5 rebs. Turnovers... 12 for us, 9 for them.

Last year we were 1-8 from three against them. Today, 2-8 so far, so we are getting some looks. We are +2 on the boards. Our best offense has been to beat them up the floor when they miss a shot for early offense.

Cats:30% FG, 100% FT (4 for 4). UCF: 48% FG, 60% FT. We are -2 in points off turnovers, that's pretty good if the other UCF game I watched is an accurate indicator.

3rd qtr, 6:36, 32-24. Careless passing.

4:43, 34-29. Timeout.

End of 3rd qtr, 41-36, Cats not going quietly. Justine has 9, Kianna with 8, Mackenzie has 6. Kyla was big on the defensive board that qtr, she has collected 8 rebounds now.

4th qtr, 6:25, 45-37.

3:17, 49-42.

2:05, 49-45, after a steal and 3-pt play by Justine.

1:00, 54-46. Cats fouling.

41 seconds, 56-48.

** Final, 62-54, UCF. Strong effort against a good team at their place. Very tough to look sharp all the time against that defense. Their announcer was obviously impressed, calling us "pesky" and "scrappy" at various junctures.

Justine had 13 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts, 1 stl. Katie rebounded from a rough 1st qtr turnover-wise and had none after that, plus she had 10 pts, 3 rebs, 5 asts and 2 stls. Kianna in double-figures with 10 pts. Mackenzie had 8 pts, 6 rebs, 2 blks, and 2 stls. Good game for Kyla, she had 10 boards, plus 3 pts.

Next up is George Mason, which features 2 of the top 3 scorers in the A10, both of them new to that program. Suddenly, they look like a top-four team in the conference.

I could only follow by LiveStats, but we seemed to give UCF a tough battle right down to the last couple of minutes including beating the spread. Of our eight losses, five have been to top-100 teams. Meanwhile, Mason has also lost all of their games to the top 100 but have had ten homes games already v. only 6 for the Wildcats. I would not be surprised to see us play them very tough even in Fairfax.

Our record may not be superb, but they have taken on a stronger schedule that will pay off in the long run and help attract stronger recruits. This will be a long-term project, but I feel like we are already making progress.
