Mercer is picked to finish 1st in the SoCon. Currently, 4-2 on the season. The losses are to two top 50 teams, Georgia and Western Kentucky. Best win is against #83 UCF.

A guard oriented team, apparently. Their opponents have committed 22.5 turnovers per game, the Bears only 13 per game. They are getting outrebounded by over 6 per game, but that's heavily skewed by the games against the three top 100 teams.

At 7 pm this evening, Mercer visits Campbell in a battle of orange-clad southern mid-majors.

Mercer came from 11 down in the second half to win, 58-57, thanks to a steal and score in the closing seconds.

The Bears' tallest starter for this game was 5-10. They can force the issue with their defense in a variety of ways. They also have a high end offensive talent in Kahlia Lawrence.

#242 at #88. Predicted score is 67-53. 11% chance. Need to handle their pressure and take care of the ball.

Cats in man-to-man, Mercer in a 2-3 zone.

1st qtr, 3:36 left, 12-6, Cats. Doing a nice job against their zone. Ally has 8 pts and 4 rebs. Expecting some defensive pressure soon. Cats substitute 4 players.

Mercer switches to man.

End of 1st qtr, 14-12, Mercer. Good to see Chloe playing again. Offense disrupted by their extended man-to-man, eight Cat turnovers, most of them late.

2nd qtr, 4:43 left, 26-22, Wildcats. Justine with 9, Ally has 8. Cats are shooting 52% from the field, Mercer 33%.

Check that, might be 26-21, with a Mercer 3-ptr downgraded to a 2-ptr.

Justine asserting herself, she's up to 13, Cats up 31-25, 2:23 left in the half.

Halftime, 33-32, Cats. Very good half. Justine with 13 pts and 3 rebs. Ally has 8 pts and 5 rebs. Katie has 6 pts and 2 asts. Mackenzie has 4 pts, 3 rebs, 4 asts, and 2 stls. Andrea with 5 boards off the bench.

Mackenzieâ€™s 2 steals moved her into the top 10 all-time on that list. She is now in the top 10 in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks, (and some other closely related lists.)

Only one other Wildcat is currently in the top 10 on all four of those lists. Can you name her? Hint below.

Sarah was poked in the eye when a Mercer player stole the ball from her. No call. Hope she can return.

Mercer back to their 2-3 zone.

3rd qtr, 6:12, Mercer on a run. Both teams getting good shots, but ours not falling. Justine picked up her 3rd trying to guard Lawrence. 45-39, Mercer.

Mercer finally with the 1-3-1 half court trap, we handled it well.

3 minutes left, 51-43, Mercer. Justine still on the bench with 3 fouls, Mackenzie and Ally both in double figures now.

End of 3rd qtr, 55-46, Mercer, according to Live Stats. They took a FT away from Andrea or something there. Mercer got good looks that quarter and converted. Very few Cat turnovers that quarter.

8:39 left in the game, 59-46. Mercer still hot.

Cats trapping out of a zone now, and pressing full court. Finally getting some misses and turnovers from the Bears.

3:15, 63-50.

** Final, 69-54. Outgunned in the 2nd half.

Justine finished with 19 pts, 4 rebs, and 2 stls. Mackenzie had 14 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts and 2 stls. Ally with 10 pts and 6 rebs. Katie with 6 pts, 5 rebs, 6 asts and 2 stls. Andrea had 7 rebs.

Pretty good job of taking care of the ball in the 2nd half and, except for the end of the 1st quarter, in handling their pressure defenses. Just didn't convert enough on the offensive end to stay in the game. Sarah never did return. Justine's 3rd foul was a problem, even after she returned to the game we couldn't let her guard Lawrence any more.

And I'm still trying to figure out what happened to Andrea's FT. No mention of it in the play-by-play -- no make, no miss, no violation, no nothing. Maybe it's hiding with Barbara Sitton's missing point from the SoCon tournament in Asheville a few years ago.
