I love the fact that after he dunks he hustles back down the court to play defense. Keep up the good work! |

He's playing for an Under Armour sponsored travel team, if that carries any weight? |

It does, but most of the other schools recruiting him are also UA (Notre Dame, Northwestern, Utah) so no particular advantage over them. This will likely be a theme with a lot of our recruiting targets going forward. |

This is SO STRANGE to me.
I mean - that recruiting and youth ball have become so wedded to shoe brands as to actually influence where a kid goes to play in college (even DU). I know it's true, having read about this phenomenon (i.e. Nike and Adidas in the AAU scene, youth coaches with deals and promises of DBO gigs at the college level, etc.)... and, of course, it makes sense from a business standpoint. Where is a shoe brand's largest market for growth? Well, besides China, it's KIDS (brand 'em early, they'll need new shoes for 20-40 years, you lose little in betting that a handful of them will turn into NBA Megastars, and you've had them in your pocket since infancy).
But - regardless of the business rationale - it's gross. _________________ "that big jug headed gent can't deal with brooks down low" - Gerdy from Thirty |

Don't fear...shoe company sponsorship has nothing to do with what school he will decide to go to. Some people are watching too much TV. Besides, our basketball program is Nike not Under Armour... _________________ www.DavidsonPhotos.com

Interesting read with quotes from a number of coaches with varying opinions on the subject: http://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/candid-coaches-has-a-shoe-company-ever-cost-you-a-players-commitment/ (The majority of coaches believe they have not lost a player because of a shoe company, while 42 percent believe they have)
At the end of the day, the kid has the agency to make his own decision, but that decision can still be influenced by outside factors. I do believe the type of kids we recruit are less likely to be influenced in such ways, but the reality is the greater level of talent you recruit, the more likely shoe deals with AAU teams come into play. It is generally seen at the highest level of recruiting, with a high profile example being Diamond Stone, a top 10 overall recruit at the time, choosing to go to Maryland, reportedly because of their status as an Under Armour program. |
