When Asst Coach Brown coached me 41 years ago, he seemed pretty African American to me. Although I think we just called his color black back then. |
you called him coach brown? that sounds like hate speech. _________________ If anyone disagrees with anything I say, I am quite prepared not only to retract it, but also to deny under oath that I ever said it |

I would recommend locking down this thread. Race can be a very sensitive topic. |

The problem with early offers is that they aren't really binding. The only down side to a coach or school giving one (if they choose to pull it if the kid doesn't develop as expected by senior year) is bad publicity that causes other recruits to steer clear. How much bad pub attends anything as silly as an offer 4 years early which ultimately isn't honored? _________________ "Then they started making 3s. A lot of 3s. This seems to be the new trend. Freshman at Cox Mill received an offer from Carolina this year. I'm pretty sure it's not a good trend.
I've heard anecdotes that it may be worse with girls. Perhaps because they generally grow younger, I've heard of middle school volleyball players being offered scholarships. I suspect collegecoach has some insight. |
Has been going on for years. |
CC - anything you can tell us about the mechanics here? It is my impression that these "offers" are not really offers, but positive comments about "we'd like to offer you a scholarship". Then closer to the time they can actually commit (sign a paper), the "offer" becomes official when we actually send them a piece of paper to sign. And we have a verbal commit from a 2017 recruit, but it isn't really official until he signs a paper. Can that happen before his senior year?
I'm wondering because in Waitress's 2017 list, we're showing 5 "reported offers" but we only have 3 scholarships available. And my guess is that as we get closer to closing out 2017, the ratio of "reported offers" to available scholarships will get even higher. |

Hey, he called me stan brown.
We joked once about being related. I hope that wasn't inappropriate. [it's so hard to keep up with what the rules are going to be 4 decades in the future] _________________ "Then they started making 3s. A lot of 3s. We're talking more 3s than a bad dating site." |

Coaches will often tell a kid that they have given offers to some number of guys at a particular position, but only have one ride for that slot which they will give to the first one who says yes. Often this is true and completely above board.
Sometimes it is just sales BS designed to force a kid to commit. The Silver Yahweh tried to do that with me in the spring of 74. "We've only got one scholarship left for a WR. We really want you, but if this other guy says yes first it will be gone." He was full of it and I knew it. But I ended up signing with DU a few weeks later anyway. _________________ "Then they started making 3s. A lot of 3s. We're talking more 3s than a bad dating site." |

A bit of clarification: His name tag as a freshman (and I think the Wildcat Handbook) said that was what he wanted to be called at the time. But those of you who met him at the Maloy events would know him as Les. _________________ Μεγάλη ἡμÎÏα εἶναι ΛÏγξ |

I'm not surprised, given the list of schools he was considering. Davidson just didn't seem to fit. |

I predict he'll become a star there and will meet a nice Morman girl. _________________ “Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.†— Jeff Bridges as The Dude in "The Big Lebowski" |
