A little over 10 years ago, (pay attention, the timing is significant) in a fit of boredom I called up a local for profit college and asked if they needed any part time teachers. I went so far as to actually create a resume and even went on an interview, but nothing came of it.

However, a few months later another "college" called me on a Friday night, saying they were in a jam. One of their instructors had suddenly gotten a real job and they needed somebody for Monday. It sounded interesting, so I signed up. This was on the local Army base, and it was a somewhat experimental "lunch time" class for active duty soldiers. Being the father of a soldier, I thought, "Well, soldiers are almost as cool as sailors, so this could be fun."

So for a couple of months I went through the recently reinforced gate five days a week, stopped to show my insurance card, and went to teach. I always wanted to show the MP's my long expired Naval Reserve ID card and say "This is who I used to be!" but even I'm not that tacky. They were busy enough.

One of the fundamental principles of the US Military is that insignia of the various branches must be completely different. My students were almost all in uniform, so I resorted to printing out a chart I found online so I could keep track of who these folks were. I did not pin any old insignia on my own sport shirt collar. Again, even I'm not that tacky.

It was a fun gig, and I enjoyed the military anthropology. The military branches do not even share common belt buckles, and the signs on Navy, Army and Air Force bases are all painted differently. We all do the same things, but we are required to give them different names.

This was not teaching at Davidson. These folks were juggling full time military service, parenthood and college classes hoping to get ahead. I loved 'em. I even had a 2 year old guest at one session, due to a daycare issue.

The "college" never got around to paying me because the paperwork never got straight, but I didn't care. It was my contribution to the war effort. I suspect the "college" kept the money the Army paid them, though. Everybody passed, especially the guy with lousy grades who wrote in large letters, "Best instructor ever!!" on my end of course evaluation. I had to respect such a competent attempt to work the refs. (BBall reference)

In case you were wondering, there is a point to all this, and here it comes.

All over the buildings we were using, there were posters in large letters:

"Arabic teachers wanted!"

Did I mention the base had a large Ranger contingent? Did I mention half my students were just back from Afghanistan? Did you realize that once in a while even a blind military establishment can find an acorn or two?

I looked at the posters and said to myself, "No Kidding!" Being a sailor, and being on an Army base, my actual words were slightly different, but this is a family friendly message board.

Go Soldiers!

Just goes to show you Harvard ain't no Davidson.

Casey and Curry were cheaters. And so is Harvard. Preaches ethics practices convenience. Same goes for the Dookie head coach.

It's not that simple. The instructions for the test were either ambiguous or poorly communicated. Those implicated had done a variety of things that may or may not have been considered cheating. Each case was to be judged separately over time. We don't know what Curry might have been accused of or the likelihood that he would have been suspended. He didn't want to chance finding out in the midst of an academic year whether he had lost that year's eligibility.

I would hope that DU's policies on open-book tests would be clearer upfront to the students. I don't know if there has been any similar incident at DU, though unlikely ever on that scale. I also don't know that if he had decided to transfer instead if DU would have taken him, or if he would have come if he had known about the snakes.

He was also given the choice to withdraw for a year or fight the charges and risk the verdict of the court and faculty. He withdrew for a year. Standard operating procedure to allow him back, as any other student.

There was an article on this situation in the N&O this weekend. I hope he does well. He sounds appropriately chastened.

I'm glad that we spend our time debating whether a board poster calling a school's public information office is inappropriate behavior and not which crimes our student athletes have committed are worth being upset over.

I hope Shawn Lester succeeds. I watched him in high school. Kid is explosive. I still think that he'd have been better off playing football in college. He's a dangerous receiver with great hops, size, and speed.

while i don't think that they committed any major crimes, it is still embarrassing for the school and program to have to deal with. I think it is silly when you have posters on message boards(not this one), refer to kids who make a mistake as thugs. these two definitely made an error in judgement and should know better but I am not going to overreact to this, although it does upset me because even if they are only suspended for, let's say a half, that may cost the team early.

Could you give a scouting report on him if you don't mind. I know this is a davidson board and not the place to get a scouting report on charlotte players but any insight would be appreciated.

The comments are fun. This one sounds like Cobb wrote it, except for the absence of the word "carpetbagger."

"Being a North Carolinian, I'm all for New Yorkers not knowing the geography of the Carolinas. Hopefully they will drive right past us and decide to stop in Florida as they all flee their socialist nanny-state. Unfortunately no such luck so far. Damn they are annoying."
