In '76, we hired Gary Walters and then Dave Pritchett to replace Bo Brickels.

Jim Larranaga, who was 26, was retained from Brickels's staff to hold down the fort and answer the phone until a coach accepted the position and stayed more than 2 weeks.

We would have been better off to have offered the head coaching position to Larranaga. We staggered through the wilderness from '76-'81.

Larranaga left Davidson to play and coach in Europe. He returned to the US a few years later and reunited with Terry Holland at Virginia.

As much as we would like to say how we could have avoided the "desert" years, I don't think it would have been possible the way things were set up. Fill in the blank with whatever name you would like. I will start, Thom Cartmill. In 1976, JL was only a short time removed from taking a haymaker from KD, not sure he would have been the savior/best choice to gain a lot of respect as the head coach. I could be wrong.

No one would have been a savior, due to limitations the administration put on the program, but Larranaga would have been better than the 3 coaches chosen in '76 and '78.

Back to the theme of the thread, if Coach Mowen is promoted, will she hire Coach Savage as an assistant? She knows the players, the opponents, and the ins and outs of Davidson.

We can rotate the job around Coach Mowen and the other assistants for the next 20 years or so. The next time we look for a coach, we can eschew flying in candidates for interviews if we look in-house.

Dr. Spencer has to be looking down on this and smiling. After having a D1 women's program for 25 years, we cannot find anyone from outside the program who is willing to coach our team. Even the Clippers could find a coach in the pre-Chris Paul/Blake Griffin/DeAndre Jordan days.

At a game last season I said that we could improve the team by replacing the coaches with people from the stands. I wasn't joking. Not dummies like myself. But a coaching staff of Jen O'Brien, Heather McKee, and Tim Cowie would win games and improve players. And they'd be tough in a 3-on-3 league. I guess Sam Spencer would be pleased. Good for him.

Good for her. I always enjoyed watching her play.

UNCW hired ODU coach Karen Barefoot. UNCW has gone 42-112 the last 5 years, so it is possible for a moribund program to hire a head coach from another school.

Barefoot was 113-93 at ODU. That's a school that thinks they should be in the NCAA Tournament every year due to their history. Those aspirations are difficult in a 1 bid league.

Davidson is looking for a head coach at the same time as ODU, which is not good for us. Rhonda Rompola played at ODU with Nancy Lieberman many years ago. Rompola transferred to SMU, but maybe ODU will try to get her to come back to remind fans and prospects about their glorious past.

It would be interesting if ODU hired one of the candidates mentioned for our position.

That would be very disappointing if they hire one of the mentioned candidates when weve had this big of a jump on them to find a new coach.

It would be interesting if WE could hire one of the candidates mentioned for our position.

Heard another candidate on campus today...No offense to that person, but we are now basically looking for anyone interested with head coaching experience.

Maybe Michael Jacobson is interviewing for the Women's Coaching job Monday so he'll have something to keep him busy during his redshirt year. We know he's going to be here.

Idk, seeems like a good retirement job for City.
