Re: Davidson's Best Basketball Teams
Three of my four years at Davidson are included in that list. The one missing was our junior year when my roommate took the spring semester in Washington. Our senior year he was head manager. (Luther Moore succeeded him the next year, also on the list.) As students we saw players from Hetzel to Maloy, chronologically. So that is the base of expectations for my roommate. His email to me makes this board seem tame a lot of times. He joins me for games in the DC area, including the A10 tournament.
Sometimes he asks me things that I can observe or hear about just for being here. Sometimes he asks arcane things that I doubt I knew at the time and his memory is a bit foggy about, such as recently about Scott Sinnock.

As a poster whose typos are frequent and ambiguous, to a poster whose precision and appropriateness I admire (Steve Lee), I found some humor this line. A rare mistake...or was it?

If so, wouldn't his old roomie have to spliff him at games?
Back on topic: Class of '69 didn't overlap with Hetzel, but he, Terry, Don, Barry, Charlie et al. were on TV a lot when I was in high school. Dick Snyder was a senior my freshman year. Three of my four years at DU made the list, as well as the two years prior and the year after (comprising 6 of the top seven years on the list). The Lefty Era was truly the Golden Age of Davidson basketball.

At least it would seem so, with all that jointing and spliffing going on. Ahhh, the 60's.WildCock wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 8:44 pmIf so, wouldn't his old roomie have to spliff him at games?

Here are the Massey ratings each year - pretty close. Massey's ratings show the A-10 champ teams a little higher than your list, with 2022 at 8th best, 2015 9th with a #49 ranking, and 2018 10th at #62. The 72-74 teams also fell in that #62 to #70 range.
The worst team, per these rankings, was 1990 at 1-24 (D-1 only I guess), #284 of 291 D-1 teams that year.Cat Forever wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 1:33 pmHere are my picks for the 10 best:

Good thing that season pre-dates the existence of this board.

Re: Davidson's Best Basketball Teams
None of the teams from my era (76-79) made the list.
Our win total during those 4 years was 27.
We did have 4 head coaches, one of whom never coached a game, as well as a committee of assts acting as head coach after the disappearance of the head coach at the time.
I wouldn't put the 2005 team on the list. They lost to UNCG in either the first or 2d round of the SoCon tourney. They may have been undefeated in the SoCon, but I'd still leave them off.
The 96 team should be honorable mention. Undefeated in conf play, they beat Marshall be 49 (give or take) on the road.
Lost in crushing fashion to WCU in the tourney final. WCU as a 16 seed had a last possession shot to beat #1 seed Purdue.
The 2018 team didn't win the conf but won the a10 tourney and scared the hell out of Kentucky despite an off game from Peyton Aldridge (Gudmunson was sensational). They rate an honorable mention.

Re: Davidson's Best Basketball Teams
I lived in Statesville before I matriculated at Davidson in 1965, so I experienced pretty much all of the Lefty years. I would rank the 24-2 1965 team at #2. I think they would have beaten 1968 rather handily, and they would have gone a long way in the tournament had they just gotten past VM-effin-I.
I would also put the 1996 team in there ahead of 2005. Their Massey rating was 69, and boy, were they fun to watch.

I loved that 2005 team. Nice NIT wins on the road got them on my list. We don't have that many post season wins. I also witnessed the 1996 NIT debacle vs. South Carolina in Columbia.

Regarding Massey, does anyone believe there were 17 teams better than our 2008 team? 22 better than 1968? 14 better than 1965? 68??? better than 2007? ... and on down the list.

Re: Davidson's Best Basketball Teams
Obviously they don’t weigh late season improvement. We were the third best team in the country in ‘08. After what Kansas did to Carolina in the semis, I will give Memphis its due as #2.
