Re: the US Open- I'm about done with Mike Davis, the CEO of the USGA. He should follow through on his promise to retire. I'm tired of seeing him stand up and apologize for course conditions for which he has the primary responsibility for creating. And then he stands up at the closing ceremony and grossly mispronounces Matt Parziale's name as the low amateur. Parziale is a firefighter who had to take time off to play in the tournament. He deserved to have his name pronounced correctly.

Not stupid for the players. One of them gets a win over a Hall of Famer. I just can't imagine how they'll find someone to put up $10 million to watch two guys who aren't top players any longer.

$10 million
The power of American capitalism. I'm sure they can find the advertisers and networks to put up the money and advertise it. They may be past their prime, but they are still a known draw for sponsors.

"I played better than what the score indicates..."--Tiger after his opening round score of even par at The Open. In truth, he played exactly as well as the score indicates. That's kinda why they keep score. The guys who played better than what Tiger's score indicates are the 31 guys who finished under par.

That Fedora thing was just plain weird. He is probably on the hot seat because the program seems to be slipping below both Duke and NC State (and I can't say things would go well for him if his team ventured up to Boone, either).
Lord knows the pressure can't possibly arise from a concern that some wrongdoing is about to be uncovered and punished.
[Citycat is invited to provide detail supporting the theory that UNC football coaches aren't actually subjected to a hot seat because no one cares that much about football there.]

"UNC emails published by The News & Observer last year showed that history department administrators worried about “blowback” and “a fight on our hands” if Smith’s course [which included a discussion of the cheating scandal] was offered in 2017-18. It was kept off the schedule."

The upshot: work at UNC and have some thoughts about the athletics scandal? Keep them to yourself.
