I found Townsell's game intriguing. And, like Bates Jones, I am sure he could have played elsewhere under scholarship. I think in these instances the player preferred to go to the school of his choice. Can't blame him for that.

I disagree. Certainly Luke Maye was treated differently at Carolina as a "preferred" walk-on. (And I know he ultimately was awarded a scholarship before he enrolled. That's actually a hell of a preference). The expectation for Bates are different because he's a "preferred" walk-on.

I disagree. Certainly Luke Maye was treated differently at Carolina as a "preferred" walk-on. (And I know he ultimately was awarded a scholarship before he enrolled. That's actually a hell of a preference). The expectation for Bates are different because he's a "preferred" walk-on.

By definition, a walk on is a kid that shows up unbeknownst to the coaching staff and says he would like to tryout and walk on.

A preferred walk on is a kid that is recruited to a school to come play, but is told that they want that athlete to be a part of the team, but a scholarship is not being offered.

Either way, once a kid is on the roster, the expectations, benefits, etc. are the same as a scholarship athlete, minus the scholarship money. Neither a walk on or a preferred walk on can receive institutional aid based on their participation for that sport.

alot of FCS football programs use "preferred walk-ons" to round out their roster. At W&M, there is a long tradition of preferred walk-ons being awarded scholarships in later years if they earn playing time with their performance. Several of these scholarships have been endowed specifically for former walkons.

Technically if they are being recruited they can't receive institutional aid otherwise they would count against their athletic scholarship count

technically they can up to the sport counter maximum, after that, not based on athletics....

Additionally, a preferred can probably be told by a coach that a schollie may/will open up for sophomore year, if said institution is fully committed at the time, no?

Preferred or not can be told that. It would be a verbal offer that would not have to be honored if they choose not to.

I don’t think the label “preferred” means anything literal but certainly the guys who ARE preferred walk-ons are better than normal walk-ons. Its just like labeling your 4th and 5th string quarterbacks; neither will play but one is more “preferred” than the other.

Just speculation and this ship might have sailed, but a certain university received a commitment today to bring their scholarship total to 13. They are also heavily pursuing (and appear to be the front runner) for another P5 transfer.

For those good at math, that's one over the scholarship limit. Maybey this affects the Cats. Maybey not.
