Bam! Great news and great work by our generous alums/former players/parents/ and friends!

https://www.davidson.edu/news/news-stories/171110-four-full-scholarships-transform-davidson-baseball

We ought to be a permanent contender in the A-10 with this additional money. Gavin is working on an 8th scholly by the end of this fiscal year.

The A-10 average, I believe, is about 10 scholarships (the NCAA limit is 11.7). Let's get to 10!

Go Cats!

I also think it would be gracious to recognize that the scholarships have been named in honor of Jim Murphy, current AD and former Cats baseball player.

This is truly a game changer for Davidson baseball. This doesn't happen without last year's success. There are those out there with the means willing to support Davidson athletics in a big way. Thanks to all those involved with getting this done. Let's not stop here.

I instinctively checked the calendar to see if it was April 1 when I saw this

These new scholarships are designated in honor of Jim Murphy. Jim was a member of the 1975 baseball team. This was the team trainer Junior Wade coached because the previous quit on short notice.

That team had a winning record in conference play and overall, which was rare in those days. They beat South Carolina on the road. South Carolina was the runner up in the College World Series that in '75. South Carolina was an Independent, so midweek games were as important to them as weekend games. Davidson finished near the top of the Southern Conference standings, but the regular season champ advanced to the NCAA Tournament in those days.

That team was Davidson's best until 2017. There were many 1975 team members at the games in Chapel Hill in June. With the mention of Jim Murphy playing on that team in the press release, I suspect some of the members of that team are responsible for this incredibly generous gift. Thank you!

Very few, if any, baseball players receive a full scholarship. Most/many receive 1/3 of a scholarship. These new scholarships will enable around 12 more NCAA Tournament caliber players to play for Davidson.

Those of you who watched Davidson-Texas A&M on TV know that the ESPN announcers said, over and over, that what Davidson was doing was a wonderful story but the most important thing was to see whether resources would be committed to make it happen again.
