For some reason they call it a "World Series".

The teams are: Shrewsbury, MA (34-6); Hopewell, NJ (38-9); Randolph Co., NC (38-8); Bryant, AR (39-7); Midland, MI (40-2); Creighton Prep, NE (54-6); Lewiston, ID (39-11); and Henderson, NV (54-7).

The teams are divided into 2 pools with round robin play.

In the "Stars" pool Idaho beat Arkansas 4-0 and NC beat NJ 6-3.

In the "Stripes" pool Mass beat Mich 3-2 in 10 innings and Nebraska beat Nevada 9-1.

To give opening day pitchers a chance to pitch twice (they have pitch count rules which otherwise would prevent most from doing so) they are taking a day off today which delays the finals until Tuesday. I guess that's good since you want your best on the mound in the finals- and you should probably have to beat the other team's best to win it all.

Correction on schedule: 4 teams got Friday off, 2 got today off, and 2 are off Sunday. (BUT, the 2 scheduled to be off tomorrow are NB and MA, whose game today was suspended in the bottom the 5th with NB up 3-1)

Other change of plans- weather scares on Friday led officials to shorten all subsequent games to 7 innings. Originally the plan for rainouts was to play at Gardner-Webb as well as Shelby HS if they needed to play two games at once. (FYI- Shelby HS's field reportedly held 8100 people on Friday)

As of now NB leads their division at 2-0. NV and MA are 1-1. MI is 0-2. Randolph County leads their division at 2-0. ID and AR are 1-1. NJ is 0-2.

On Sunday NB and MA will finish their game. MI will play NV. NJ will play ID. NC will play AR. On Monday Stars #1 will play Stripes #2 and Stripes #1 will play Stars #2. The finals are scheduled for Tuesday.

Former Wichita State HC Gene Stephenson posed a good one during a game the other day. At every position, including pitcher, there have been repeat league MVPs in the major leagues. Who are they?

Hints- There are 3 1B to do it! 2 3B and CF have done it. Also, the P was during the war years.

Correct on the players. I think you're also correct on the years.

Still left: 1B (x3), SS, 3B (x2) , and one more CF.

Another hint- 2 are still active.

I would have guessed A-Rod, but The Google tells me that his awards were non-consecutive

If I answered now, it would be cheating. Being a 2x grad of UNC-CH, I'm not getting near that line, much less crossing it.

Anyone my age, slightly younger than a T-Rex, should get one of the 3B.

Michael Jack Schmidt was the one I was slapping my head over.

A Davidson buddy came back to school one September and reported he had heard Schmidt as the guest on a Cincinnati sports call-in show. One of the callers was Mike's mom, asking him to call home more often.

(Mike was from Dayton.)

Schmidt is correct. Mr. Cub was a SS when he won his MVPs.

WLW was the powerful Cincinnati AM radio station when I lived nearby circa 1971.

The Davidson buddy lived in Cincinnati. He returned to school in September '75 with a tee shirt with ECU hoops coach Dave Patton's picture on the front. It said, "Patton's Army" on the back. The Pirates were in the Commissioner's Cup in '74-'75.

The fall of '75 strained everyone's relationship with the Cincinnatian as he argued vehemently that Ed Armbrister was innocent.

Clues: 1Bs include: the player who the manager in A League of Their Own is loosely modeled after; an Auburn Tiger; and an active player. The CF started his career as a catcher. The other 3B is also an active player.

1B - Mr. Double-X
Big Hurt
? (unless it was Miggy)
CF - Murph
3B - Miggy (unless he was already playing first)

EDIT: Just looked up the last one; I'm a total idiot.
