Lefty was a wonderful character, and a very fine coach and recruiter. He was a fiery competitor who reached for the stars, though falling just a bit short; but entertained and amused a legion of fans along the way. Truly one of a kind. RIP.

There should be a designated silence time on the board. No posts for ten minutes.

Totally made the college into a national institution. I can’t think of another individual who singularly transformed a college or university in modern times more than Lefty.

Just saw the news...stunning.

Lefty put Davidson "on the map".

Great man and great coach. My favorite coach and he always will be.

Raise your arms in victory at the Pearly Gates, Lefty. Saint Peter will welcome you.

RIP

In a Davidson application essay I wrote about Lefty Dreisell. He'd been gone for over 5 years. Don't remember the question but it seems certain in retrospect that it was willfully misread in order to produce that response.

So the red lights were flashing and they had every chance to avoid making a mistake, but they nevertheless chose the legacy acceptance option.

Maybe in 5 years I'll write about Lefty in an application to The Pines.

In today’s New York Post, the fine obit on Lefty is accompanied by a photo of him with the caption noting it shows the left hander on the sideline at U. Of Maryland in 1969. Regrettably, Dave Moser seen sitting on the bench behind Lefty never moved with Lefty to Maryland. Another example of DU being misidentified.

We understand that a 1969 photo of Lefty at Cole Field House might be of an East Regional Wildcat game, but that's asking a lot, really, too much, of the New York Post.

As always, very astute insight by MM15. Of course, the photo caption designates it showing Maryland sideline, with no mention of Cole Field House.

The 'Hander (as Dave Pritchett called him) was one-of-a-kind. A great coach, who was the reason I heard of and attended Davidson.

When I talked to responsible adults about coming to Davidson, the ONLY thing about which I was given consist feedback was that Davidson had been a basketball powerhouse. No mention of academic rigor, beautiful campus, strong honor code, etc. Dr. Spencer should have inquired among my mentors as to why the success of a sports team in the 60's and early 70's was such a powerful and positive PR agent.

NPR/AP labeled the photo correctly.
