Familiar Name on Charlotte List

Mitch Kupchak is stepping aside as Hornets' GM. He was a good NBA player who played on 2 Championship teams and was a successful executive for the Lakers for many years. Ending his career as the GM of one of the worst franchises in the NBA is not the way he wants to end his tenure.

He's been well paid. He can retire to Chapel Hill and sit in a luxury box with the other Tar Heel greats.

ESPN and the Observer put together lists of possible replacements. Elton Brand and Trajan Langdon are 2 familiar names. Mike Gansey is another name some will recognize. He played for St. Bonaventure in the early 2000s when Davidson beat them in Belk.

That St. Bonaventure team had some issues later when it was discovered one of their players, a JUCO transfer, did not have an Associate's diploma, but a Welding Certificate instead. The decision to admit him and let him play on the men's basketball team was approved by the head coach, Jan Van Breda Kolff, the AD, and the President of the school. There were some vacancies after this was revealed.

Mike Gansey transferred to West Virginia and has done very well after graduating. Maybe we can entice him to return to Belk.

Jan Van Breda Kolff played college basketball for Vanderbilt. He played in the ABA and NBA for several years. He was the head coach at 4 NCAA schools. St. Bonaventure was his last head coaching job. His dad, Butch, was Bill Bradley's coach at Princeton and then coached the Lakers.
