Saw that, though we seemed lost on that particular press, with four of our players in the backcourt. If they hadn't thrown the ball away, it looked as if they would have had an easy uncontested layup. On the plus side, we forced a turnover with out full-court press today, the first time in my recent memory

I guess a team being deemed “competitive” is in the eye of the beholder. What I know, and see, is that we don’t pass the eye test. Didn’t last year, and definitely don’t this year.

Our seats are about even with the rim at the other end of the floor facing the other team's bench. The Patriot chased Reed down the floor and timed his jump perfectly to swat Reed's "soft as a baby's behind" shot/drop/placement before it could go into the hoop. It was not a goaltend.
The better question is why Reed didn't slam the ball through the hoop with a windmill motion, perhaps drawing a foul and an old fashioned 3 point play?
Did we really call a timeout with 8 seconds left and another one with 5 seconds left? ESPN"s play by play says we did. That was terrible if we did. We were only down 2. We should have kept trying to drive after we inbounded it with 8 seconds to go and maybe we would have gotten a good look for a 3 if we couldn't get a layup and no foul was called.
Didn't Grant inbound the ball? He's our best chance to hit a layup or draw a foul with 5 seconds left. We took the ball out of his hands and put him 30 feet from the basket.
We were up 35-31 with 12:17 to go and were outscored 13-2 over 4 minutes. That's ineffective defense and offense. It is similar to the loss to WCU in the 2014 SoCon Semifinal where we gave up 28 points on 12 possessions, or something like that. We would have been better to have fouled the Catamounts every time they crossed halfcourt.
Their coach is a great guy with an inspiring story. If he becomes a great coach we can say we were there for one of his great early victories.
Bagelcat and I were there when Joe Montana came off the bench with Notre Dame down 14-0 and led them past UNC-CH 21-14 in 1975.
Re: In Game: vs. George Mason
A large group of students came in during the 2nd half and sat in some of the students' seats in the upper arena behind the visitors' bench. Two of them shot free throws during one of the contests during a timeout. The group was wearing khaki/tan pants and black shirts. They could have been mistaken for a cult, but they were identified as the baseball team.
If they had sat in the east end zone, the student attendance would have been decent.

Last night in an NBA game under similar circumstances, rather than throw a pass into a clogged front court, a guard took a one handed pass around a defender. Guy just spun around and made a 25 footer. In fairness, he might be a better shooter than our guards.

How he fielded the errant inbounds pass was about as amazing as the shotUrsa Midmajor wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 9:09 amLast night in an NBA game under similar circumstances, rather than throw a pass into a clogged front court, a guard took a one handed pass around a defender. There were at least 11 members of the Class of '77 at the game.

It was also a much better play design with a strong screen to get Durant switched off Steph. And the inbounder (a rookie who played for Santa Clara last year) made a good pass where only Steph could get it. We are missing several pieces to a play like that, not just the made shot.Ursa Midmajor wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 9:09 amLast night in an NBA game under similar circumstances, rather than throw a pass into a clogged front court, a guard took a one handed pass around a defender. Our inability to win close games is just depressing.

More than students excepting baseball players? There’s no way, but just asking the question is sad.
