The problem is that freshman bigs rarely come in immediately and provide significant, high-quality minutes. Luka and Peyton are very much the exceptions not the norm. At best (and I stress at best) you usually get something like what Sam did in 2020/21 or what Bailey is doing right now; i.e. where they show sparks but also look like freshman (which is to be expected).

That means we need to get a transfer portal big if we want an immediate difference maker. The problem there is that Bailey and Sam are locked into the starting big man spots and heavy minutes for next year. So a transfer big would likely have to accept that at best he'll be the 3rd big and directly competing against Skogman for minutes. Skogman has improved since his rough start and would have a major leg up in any competition since he's already had a year (and a lot of minutes) in our complex system. I also don't think we are the kind of program that brazenly recruits over guys we just got into the program.

Its just a tough bag of goods to sell to a kid in the current climate.

Going big for the last spot most likely I’ll wager. Need help on the boards.

You might be forgetting how much better the senior Luka was than the freshman version.

Oh yeah for sure. I'm lost as to how that makes pursuing a big with our last scholarship any more likely. If anything doesn't it make it less likely because our development is so good that we trust that all the guys on the roster right now will improve?

The team is going to want someone ready to go once Mennenga is gone. If bigs take a while to develop, that’s all the more reason to grab one who can develop for a year.

Seems like there have been a lot of cryptic comments suggesting we expect to lose some players to the portal. Don’t know if that’s inside info or just a reasonable guess based on the present day reality of college hoops.

This I agree with 100%. Getting a developmental big who's willing to sit and learn on the bench for a year (like Logan) makes perfect sense. I just don't think we are getting someone who'll play 20 minutes a game out of the jump.

I don't think we'll lose anyone, but you never know...The most important thing is brining in the right kid that fits the school and can handle some adversity and not hit the portal. If they eject after year one, you are back to square one and wishing you brought the transfer in and added wins. Difficult choice, but coaching staff knows how to evaluate a kid and their likelihood for success, definitely better than admissions department.

Absolutely. Luka was really weak. I was at the SBU game in Olean his freshman year. A skinny Osunniyi pushed Luka around. I felt bad for Luka. I never thought Luka would get as strong as he got to be. Can't think of anyone who improved as much as he did.

I think some of our disagreements are because we have different expectations about how long this rebuild will take. It may take a bit to get back to 22-24 wins, but we could climb to .500 next year. Our coaches will get it done.

Wow, this jumped to 505 faster than I expected.

The Kool-Aid list reflects publicly available sources, typically internet recruiting or social media sites (e.g., Rivals.com, Verbalcommits.com, Twitter, etc.), and published reports. The list is maintained for entertainment purposes only. It contains no information received from coaches or recruits. It should be updated approximately every five pages. For purposes of calculating open scholarships, this list assumes that reported non-scholarship players are still non-scholarship and no players will take an extra COVID year. Finally, the list now separates players who are publicly reported to visit, or have visited, Davidson.
