After watching Lipscombs' NIT run I am curious why more of their players aren't on the Cats roster. Add 2 or 3 of their guys and we are most likely a top 20 team.

I don't know their schools Academic challenge but it seemed like many of the players went to pretty solid high schools. I would think head to head we should win the recruiting battle. Their freshman big man would have been a great addition.
Perhaps they wanted a conservative Christian college
Would the Davidson of the 60s, with mandatory chapel, have qualified?

As recently as '75-'76, every Religion professor was an ordained Presbyterian minister.

Although some were politically liberal, their theology was similar.

An essential part of Davidson's mission was to produce Religion majors who would become ministers.

Mandatory Vespers, perhaps. The mandatory chapel was usually not religious in nature. Vespers ended after my sophomore year. I was paid work study money to turn pages for Mr. Welsh that year.

Chapel speakers were often very good. Those we didn't heckle very much. We treated the bad ones rather shabbily, as you might expect from guys there involuntarily. E. H. Little spoke one time. He did fine, of course, but we went all out in showing appreciation more for what all he had done for the school over the years than for the speech itself. Harry Golden spoke occasionally, and he was probably the most popular speaker we had, not surprisingly. We gave right-wing political hacks particular grief. We were a rather conservative bunch politically, for the day, and the Young Republicans was one of the largest groups on campus, but we didn't put up with a lot of crap from any side. We were polite to Strom Thurmond. We got more cuts each year, so seniors had to go maybe just half the time. Chapel period was about a half hour, with enough time for a reception for some speakers or a walk to the PO before the next class. Scott Woodmansee can share with you his bad memories of being the chaplain and having to come up with speakers.

stevelee, you might experience some joy in the fact that one of the favorite speakers at chapel in my era was The Rev Clovis Chapel.

...there is no point in us speculating about random guys with tenuous connections to the program.
I will leave you with this. On this board, calling out other people's behavior as pointless might not be a good practice.

In this instance, calling out as pointless this particular individual's on-topic posts in this particular thread is problematic. I will be happy to provide you with historical perspective, if you like.

Agree fully. I don't post much but read regularly and continue to notice a disturbingly low tolerance for dissenting opinions on this site. Not the Davidson way, in my opinion.

I think disagreeing without seemingly attempting to shut down conversation is a dying art. Some here are quite good at it. Many, myself included, are not.

I see in his bio that he coached before he went into the ministry. It didn't say what sport or sports. He went to Duke and then Harvard. I don't think I ever heard him. I see that a collection of his sermons are posted on line. Maybe I should read some, or maybe steal some, as out of practice as I am. I preach once or twice a year now. After I turn people down because I'm going to be gone, they tend not to call back. I guess "I'll be in Turkey that Sunday" (real example) sounds like an excuse. And as the temporary interim associate rector at St. Alban's told me, they have a lot more trouble finding organists than they do preachers. I anticipate playing a lot less this year than last.

I have known a couple members of I think the same family, both named Wallace. They were cousins of each other, and maybe nephews of Clovis.

Some need shutting down, too.

Ain't it the truth. Around my neck of the woods preachers are .05 a dozen. Organists, not so much.

It would be a real shame if any of these names happened to leak their way into my PM inbox.... :D
