Not sure it is that sinister. Amaker is just using Harvard's version of the Davidson Trust to his advantage. Just read an article about a lawsuit in Princeton going after the tax exempt status of the University because of the trust earning and the cash received from patented drugs the university has helped developed. Tell me you wouldn't make the same choice.
It certainly helps that need-based aid kicks in for all families making less than around $150K a year at Harvard. It must be nice to have a $40B endowment.
