She was detained about a week before Russia invaded Ukraine. Which was several months after Russia decided to invade. I haven't seen anyone suggest that the drugs weren't hers. She's been making excellent money working in Russia. She's been doing it for years. I don't know why she'd fly her drugs in with her. She should have a local supplier by now. Gotta be smart if you choose to break laws on foreign soil.

Yes, for years. And for much more than she makes in the WNBA. Still, she has plenty of cash to have a better supply system for her recreational pharmaceuticals.

My understanding is that she was caught with CBD vape oil, which is legal in the US and most of western Europe. The legality depends on the % of THC that it contains, though. Disclaimer: I know this because I looked it up to write this post, and not because I needed to.

Hopefully, that pipeline also is closed to American players now. Not sure why that call wasn't made before Griner traveled there. As 77 noted, Putin had been rattling his sabre for a number of months before the invasion of Ukraine.
