I can tell you from a High Point resident's point of view, they are sick and damn tired of Nido Qubein buying up the city and putting a wall around it to keep the people who live in High Point out of entire sections of the town they used to live in.loosha's lad wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 1:03 pmWould someone with genuine insight into how HPU operates and what it's all about be willing to send me some bullet points in a PM? I don't know if it is genuine insight, but that Forbes article linked on the first page of the thread had some more details than I had seen before.loosha's lad wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 1:03 pmWould someone with genuine insight into how HPU operates and what it's all about be willing to send me some bullet points in a PM? They are doing that to keep their students from being mugged and shot at. I specifically have a clause in my contract that requires on campus parking for when I shoot there. I won't walk a block off campus. It's not safe.Wildcat92 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 1:09 pmI can tell you from a High Point resident's point of view, they are sick and damn tired of Nido Qubein buying up the city and putting a wall around it to keep the people who live in High Point out of entire sections of the town they used to live in.loosha's lad wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 1:03 pmWould someone with genuine insight into how HPU operates and what it's all about be willing to send me some bullet points in a PM? I grew up there. They bought a retirement community in my mother's neighborhood, which is not unsafe, and put a brick wall around that too.collegecoach8502 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 3:27 pmThey are doing that to keep their students from being mugged and shot at. Re: High Point to the A10?
It’s unsafe now because they put a campus full of rich kids in the middle of a poor area and walled it off. Saying they had to put security and walls up all around campus because it’s unsafe is getting cause and effect backwards.
I’ve never been to HPU campus so can’t speak to specifics there but Elon has gone through a similar (though more reasonable imo) transformation in recent decades. The campus is far enough from downtown Burlington so that students aren’t targeted or unsafe. No need for walls or security or talking negatively about long-time local residents.

Similar to Davidson relocating long time local residents I guess.Jay Catsby wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 6:31 pmIt’s unsafe now because they put a campus full of rich kids in the middle of a poor area and walled it off. Apparently HPU is flirting with accreditation problems. Again.

Any reference to Davidson is far off base! Never will be or can be compared!!

Re: High Point to the A10?
Thank you for pointing me back to Cobb's link on pg.1 -- somehow I had missed that. What a fascinating (and damning) assessment. JB, walls around campuses send a message, and from your experience there it sounds like local residents are receiving that message loud and clear. It's pretty tough to build a positive town-gown relationship when your college presents itself as a fortress, but HPU's record on diversity of race/ethnicity and financial need imply that they're not worried about those optics. After reading that Forbes article, and then jumping over to the president's wikipedia page, I feel like I need to shower.quickcat wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 2:11 pmI don't know if it is genuine insight, but that Forbes article linked on the first page of the thread had some more details than I had seen before.loosha's lad wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 1:03 pmWould someone with genuine insight into how HPU operates and what it's all about be willing to send me some bullet points in a PM? The ivory tower shouldn't require battlements and a portcullis. The whole place screams STAY OUT. Uniformity and exclusion. Sure is pretty, though.

You wouldn't want people wandering through the campus for the free ice cream etc.

Gross.
From that article:
"Though he refers to himself as “Dr. Qubein,” the master’s is his highest degree; he’s received only honorary doctorates."
I don't care what credentials a person does or doesn't have. But what does this say about a person? And a person who is president of an academic institution? Dear lord. I mean, this sounds like a cult leader.

I don't know anything about High Point. However, I found an interesting rumor about Drake and Bradley (post by a Bradley fan). This is for entertainment purposes only.

The "wishful thinking" comments seem apt, though I'm hesitant to discount anything in this uncertain era.
