Helene went just east of Jackson and Swain Counties. The Nantahala River did not flood, and the Nantahala Outdoor Center, which is built right on the edge of the river, was undamaged. The Tuckasegee River rose, and Bryson City had some water in the downtown area, but the buildings were mostly undamaged.
"We were in the center ring the whole night,'' longtime Davidson coach Bob McKillop said. ''We were not on the ropes. We were not on the mat. We were in the center ring slugging away, and we just ran out of time.''

One of the most alarming things I saw the Friday of the storm were the fire trucks out on bridges over the Tuck, dropping lines over the edge to measure how much distance remained between the water and the bottoms of the bridges. They knew the upstream dams were releasing more water, and it was gonna be close.
Jackson County is remarkably in okay shape. WCU's campus sustained very little damage. As our campus director of emergency services put it, we're basically the donut hole surrounded by hell.
Our people, though, weren't spared. We've fielded hundreds of requests to our student emergency fund. I know of at least five employees who've lost homes. We know folks have lost loved ones. It's awful.
There are stories that give me hope, though. And I'm glad to hear Bliss is in good shape. The next hurricane will draw the world's attention away from WNC for a while, and that's understandable, but I beg you to keep your mountain neighbors in your prayers.

I am surprised that one of Western North Carolina's most visible athletes, with the benefit of a RedBull infused social media presence, has said absolutely nothing on that social media about the suffering in Western North Carolina.
Just surprising.
Just surprising.

Hey let’s don’t do this. Let’s don’t parse social media and spread negativity based on assumptions that likely have no basis in fact. Everyone is pulling together here. Neighbor helping neighbor. Everyone pushing ahead. Let’s celebrate and affirm that. If you want to do something to help, pick your favorite relief organization and dig deep.
