Yes PG by committee has been a common approach, this year should be no different. I’d say last few years with Foster & Grant handling the ball so much was the exception more than the rule. We are better when we have 2-3 or more players who can advance the ball up the court and attack the paint. And even if Loughnane and Coval aren’t starting, I’m sure they’ll get plenty of opportunities.

I’m mildly interested to see who the fifth starter will be along with Kochera, Durkin, Reed and Logan, though in the end I’m not sure it matters that much. Matt has already proven much more willing to go down the bench and play matchups than Bob ever did.

I’ll leave it to you all but the years I remember as especially good teams were not point guard by committee. Nor do I find the prospect of Kochera sharing pg duties to be a particularly promising sign. That Coval is in the same conversation as Loughnane, and that Blums is nowhere in the conversation, should reasonably make the casual observer a bit nervous. Loughnane couldn’t find his way on the floor of a 5 win A-10 team last year. Presumably, his game will require additional development along any kind of normal progression arc. My hope was that Blums was going to be the answer.

The best news I’ve heard about is a commitment to signing freshmen. I think if Davidson can do something different than everyone else, it would be in developing players that commit to the program because they believe it is worth more than what Davidson can offer in salary/ NIL. I’d rather watch a young/developing team that is committed to the Davidson ethos than a team of rent a players enjoying a semi-pro year or two of basketball.

That doesn’t mean we won’t lose a player or two to bigger dollars. After all, we lost our favorite player to bigger dollars. But it does mean we can ascribe to something greater than “that’s just the way it is now.”

2017-2018 was a committee point guard team. So was 2014-2015.

Don’t worry, Blums will get plenty of playing time. Great things happen when he has the ball in his hands.

Yes, but not at point.
I hope that Coval wins the job.

Home OOC next season:

Bowling Green
Temple
Saint Mary’s

Trying to schedule the return Ohio game. Games played in Spectrum getting tricky. I mentioned why not Bojangles Arener. Possible. Also possible, game is in Belk.

Reed looked like an all conference player. He will be our best offensive option this year, as he was toward the end of last season. Kochera hit him for an alley oop early which was the best play of the night. Those two have developed some really great chemistry.

Loughnane played great and shot great. Scored in double figures. I’d like to see him start and play 25-30 mins, but there’s a lot of competition for PT at his position.

Logan looked improved offensively but he still had some awkward moments. May not translate against more physical/athletic competition.

Blums took a lot of shots. He didn’t make that many but looked about as good as possible doing it.

Kochera was mostly absent, but I think he was letting other guys get more touches.

Laput will be a fun player for us. He should compete for conference 6th man of the year if he doesn’t start.

Overall, I’m not convinced the 3 point shooting is much better than the last few years. I hope I’m proven wrong but was not assured by what I saw this evening.

The rest of the squad looked about as expected. I doubt this is an NCAA tournament team, but there are things to be excited about.

I will also share that Joses and Hurlburt both did not play (this is posted on the official athletics website article about the game, so I’m assuming it’s public info)

Joses and Hurlburt were on the court for the pregame warmups, and Manie put on a dunk show! He has Barham hops. Obviously, any i----y is minor.

On the way home on Highway 3, guy in front of me centered a big deer, and I ran over the carcass at about 45 mph. Big jolt, and parts are hanging down under my car, but I was able to drive it home OK. I'll get my mechanic to put it on the lift in the morning and check everything out. The other guy lost his entire front end back to the radiator, which was leaning over backwards and leaking. The deer lost his life.
"We were in the center ring the whole night,'' longtime Davidson coach Bob McKillop said. ''We were not on the ropes. We were not on the mat. We were in the center ring slugging away, and we just ran out of time.''

Loughnane and Coval were the point guards except for a short period for Cochera. Perhaps that suggests the answer(s) to our concern for that position. Matt, perhaps cryptically, suggested that the coaches don’t share that concern.

Having four players in double figures in 20 minutes might speak well for the offense, or maybe suggests that the defense leaves much to be desired.

A very knowledgeable big fan who is not known for his rose-colored glasses had many positive things to say, just as he did Wednesday night. If the teams’ records provide decent seeding, in March I could take the train to Richmond and then on to the DC area.

Matt suggested that he should have played Loughnane more last season. From his performance tonight, I’m inclined to agrees.
