I do think its only a matter of time until we start getting multi-year contracts to try and stop the transfers, or at least including some kind of buyout with returning NIL payments if they leave.

Re: Portal
You mean like the multi-year contracts that coaches sign? All that does is serve as a speed bump. [See Danny Sprinkle, Sundance Wicks, and many others.]
"We were in the center ring the whole night,'' longtime Davidson coach Bob McKillop said. ''We were not on the ropes. We were not on the mat. We were in the center ring slugging away, and we just ran out of time.''

If we want to stay a “D1” program. Not sure our beloved “Mid major” status is really going to look much different than d2/d3 here any time soon. Team full of guys who either flames out in the P5/6 or are looking to jump ship for the P5/6 after a year or two. I’m almost to the point that I’d rather just go the way of most of our academic peers and float a team in d3 with a team of kids who mostly want to be there.85Wildcatsky wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 5:29 pmIs this the reality of Davidson Basketball's future?

The system is so irreparably broken. Depressing both as a longtime fan and as a parent of a kid currently in the college recruiting process.

Re: Portal
If we simply accumulate enough NIL money to keep the high school players that we recruit when they get good enough to jump in the portal, I think we will be fine. In fact, the high school talent pool could be even more productive for us given that so many other programs are almost exclusively playing the portal. Unfortunately, however, no one that I’m aware of has told the fans whether or not we have, or will have, the financial resources to do this. Maybe there’s a good reason everyone has been so tight lipped. Time will tell, I guess.

Nico Moretti off the board to FAU, per the Belk Report. I assume he was a target of ours, if the Belk Report is tweeting about him.
Re: Portal
Sorry, I didn’t mean to suggest you had.
I was trying to counter a narrative (also not promoted by you in your post, but I have seen it in others’ posts on this board) that the phenomenon of “transferring up” explains Davidson’s struggles of late. The transfer market is more fluid than ever—lubricated by the collectives’ “NIL” awards. But Davidson has never competed with the top programs. Will Johnson,* Jackson Simmons, and Luke Maye all chose to be walkons at UNC over the promise/strong likelihood of starter-level minutes at Davidson. Davidson almost always loses recruits to P5 schools, whether top-notch academic and athletic powerhouses like Duke (Ryan Kelly, post-Liberty Seth Curry) or more middle-of-the-road institutions like Baylor and Iowa State (pre-transfer Logan Kosmalski and Clint Mann). NIL hasn’t changed that. And to be very clear, Davidson is doing the same things other schools are in terms of colluding with its collective.
Davidson isn’t struggling to retain its talent. The problem (it seems pretty clear to me) is that the considerable talents of the young men representing Davidson on the basketball court the last two seasons have not included a sufficiently strong ability to accurately shoot from three.
* As a Morehead Scholar, Johnson did count against UNC’s scholarship limit.

In Chris’s interview he sounded upbeat about the NIL status, while of course encouraging more giving both to it and to the college.ScootCat wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 7:01 pmIf we simply accumulate enough NIL money to keep the high school players that we recruit when they get good enough to jump in the portal, I think we will be fine.
