Bob Whaling '74, PGA Winning Caddy

Post by citycat » Sun May 19, 2024 1:14 pm

This is a short version of an article in today's Greensboro News/Record and Winston Salem Journal.

The 1974 PGA Championship was at Tanglewood Golf Course outside Winston Salem. The course required the golfers to use local caddies. (That was the rule at all major championships until the mid-'70s. The article explains why golfers now use their regular caddies in majors.)

Bob Whaling had graduated from Davidson in '74. He was waiting to go to graduate school and had experience playing golf, so he tried out to be a caddy for the PGA, was selected, and assigned to caddy for Lee Trevino.

Trevino beat Jack Nicklaus by one shot for the title. It was Trevino's first PGA Championship win. He won it again in 1984.

Sam Snead, who was 61 or 62, finished at -1. He was local favorite because he won the GGO (Now Wyndham) 7 times.

Whaling was paid $4,000 for his week of work. He put the money in the bank. He's retired now.

Waitress’s article is much better than the one I referenced in my post.

Be sure to read the one he posted.

Yes, that is what a magazine story should be. Few and far between these days.
