There is an entry in my oldest pilot logbook dated 11/23/78. It shows a route of SAV to 09J and back to SAV, 1.4 hours day and .4 hours night. It was Thanksgiving.
I had met The Boss during the 75-76 school year, and we were sort of together for a while. I went off to Athens for grad school at UGA for the 76-77 and 77-78 school years. I was supposed to be pursuing a doctorate, but instead spent most of my time at the airport, the rugby field and various bars around town. I had my two kids with me, but they went to stay with their mother for holidays and the summers.
Most months I came back to Savannah for my Naval Reserve drills, and usually saw The Boss then, but it was not a done deal…yet.
Like most graduate students, I bought an airplane. When it broke, I swapped it for a somewhat bigger one. I was not a diligent student of my supposed chosen field. After a while I lost the ability to keep a straight face during discussions of the academic issues I was supposed to be interested in.
But it was a fun 2 years.
Back in Savannah, I reclaimed my old teaching job, and started spending more time with The Boss.
At that time, her extended family rented a house on Jekyll Island every year for Thanksgiving, and she invited me to come down for the day. My logbook also shows a 5.0 hour round trip to Lake Norman Airport on the day before Thanksgiving to drop off the kids.
The next day I headed to Jekyll. The Boss was there already. In the course of the day I gave a ride to those of her family who were interested, and flew back to Savannah as the sun set.
During the whole day of flying, I committed only two “learning experiencesâ€, which was pretty good for me. On the 29th I retrieved the kids, 4.9 hours.
On Turkey Day itself, things were interesting. I was the only nonfamily participant, and it was clearly a bit of an audition. I was not officially on the Thanksgiving Tree. The older generation viewed me with a bit of suspicion, as I did not really fit into any of their preferred categories.
I was surrounded by people I barely knew. The Boss’s 3 siblings were all married with children, and she was the outlier. So I was confronted by various spouses and children, and had a hard time keeping up with who was married to who, and which urchins they were associated with. But everybody was nice to me.
After dinner, I did bond a bit with a “future brother-in-law although I did not know it at the timeâ€. We were both scavenging turkey chunks off the carcass and eating them with our fingers. I thought, “Maybe I can fit in here after all.â€
-----
I thought I would be done with the Thanksgiving stories by now, but somehow I just keep typing in lots of extra things and I’ll just have to keep going and see how it ends.
The preliminary schedule shows an actual Cats Basketball reference for the last paragraph of the next game’s threadstart, but that’s not a promise.
We’ll see.

No trap game here; I'm sure the lads know that this is a BIG GAME - Go 'Cats, make the Hawks grounded. _________________ All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for men of good will to do nothing. Eddie Burke

Hmm, I never got my airplane in grad school. Could have used one for all my trips back and forth to Charlotte back in those days. Actually, I could use one right now since AAL has me sitting at CLT until 8:30 when they will actually fly me home. It is surprisingly hard to find a place here that will show the Davidson-UNCW game, though. Instead, all the TVs here just have a bunch of really large guys chasing around some pointy thing they keep calling a ball. I thought balls were supposed to be spherical.
I might just sit here at the bar and watch the game on my iPad to see how many people peek over my shoulder.
Oh, and go Cats! _________________ 1666, 150 Belk, 111 Little, 103 Little, 103 Duke |

Up to 3 or 4 hundred miles, even a slow private plane will beat the airlines, particularly if the "big" airport is not close to your destination. They are definitely quicker getting you into Lake Norman.
Plus they don't generally get the "I-77 at 5:00" issue that cars do.
(Although navigating from Columbia to Lake Norman is very easy if you can look down.) _________________ The best thing Davidson ever did was to admit women to classy up the place. |

I've decided I like the SSB better as an instrumental version. _________________ The best thing Davidson ever did was to admit women to classy up the place. |

Good start. Uncle Ki from three, then Luka from the paint: 5-0. |

Mine is still working. Try refreshing??
Love the start shooting the ball, 3-3. Gonna be tough stopping UNC W from scoring inside. |

Luka and Nate each with an early foul. We can’t give a big guy foul every 2 minutes. _________________ This is a post by BDF, not BDL. |

Quick yank for Luka. I am not sure why he got the boot with only one foul. _________________ "They were energized by this move to the A-10. How could you not be?" McKillop said. "The tree is filled with a lot of presents." |

Both of them really ill advised fouls too. Nate with an obvious hook on offense and Luka just offer aggressive fighting for position on defense. Have to play smart cats. |
