The Shockers are 1-1 with a 13-point home loss to Louisiana Tech and a three-point win over Providence on a neutral court. Their 7-0 starting center Midtgaard did not play in their last game (concussion). Without the Dane, four of their eight rotation players are freshmen although I'd assume he will be back for the Charleston tournament.

6-8 Markus McDuffie plays the 4 for WSU and scored 32 against Providence (6-9 3FG). KiShawn will have his hands full. Their other dangerous veteran is Samajae Haynes-Jones. If we come out running our typical "Warm Butter" perimeter defense set we'll hear that name a lot.

Just like the 'Cats, they do not play again before next Thursday.

Its gonna be a very hard game, well have to play much better than we have in our first two games, luckily I think were capable of hitting a much higher level. I think at a minimum well shoot far better than we did tonight. Defense is the big question mark in my mind, maybe this tournament is where well break out the zone?

When you start two freshmen, you have to be ready for some inconsistent performances and a long learning curve to play college defense.

I know there was some discussion about using the zone again, and while I do think it would have been a bad move against Dartmouth, part of me is hoping we break it out extensively in Charleston. Thinking a bit too hard about it, part of me hopes we went exclusively man in our first few games to establish a scouting report against us and completely throw teams like Wichita State off by switching defenses on them, especially since they also have so many freshmen.

I am not the biggest zone enthusiast out there but it made a huge difference for us, and we have had trouble recovering on shooters early on (Carter not withstanding). Being able to switch defenses and throw the opposition off could hopefully be big for us next week.

Neither predictive tools are going to be very accurate at the moment. There just isn't enough of a sample size from this year yet.

A little surprised we haven't seen zone yet, given its success last year and our length in the backcourt. I suppose the coaches may want to establish the man to man principles with the young players before they move to zone principles. Or it might be that practice has revealed some serous flaws with our zone and we need to get the wrinkles out before we use it.

Defense has been bad in both games (let CSU go 10-20 from 3 and Dartmouth of course went 15-33 from 3) so I'm interested to see what we do thursday.

Wichita State by the way has only 4 guys (2 starters and 2 off-the-bench guys) who have shot more than 2 threes this season so this could be the game to work some zone in.

From Gregg Marshall

Quote:
...Quarterfinal opponent Davidson:
"Well, the thing that stands out about them is Coach McKillop. I was a young assistant coach at Charleston, and I remember him coming to Davidson from, I think, Long Island-Lutheran there in Long Island as a high school coach. At first, he struggled. They were in the Big South Conference, which we (College of Charleston) played one year of a home-and-home in the Big South Conference, even though we weren't in the league and could not play for the conference tournament at the end of the year. Then they moved to the Southern Conference, and he got it going. He got players that fit his system. When he has that, as people around here have seen, when he had Steph Curry and those guys. They got to the Elite Eight and almost beat Kansas to go to the Final Four. They don't have to have Steph Curry to be really, really good. He's proven that. He's won for years with many, many different generations of players. They are very difficult to guard, they really, really execute offensively, and they can certainly shoot it. On the defensive end, they are better than you might think. They have length, and they play proper positioning. They are a good basketball team. Very, very well-respected program and coach. "

Hard to judge their three point shooting at this point. They were 7-25 against La Tech and 12-22 against Providence.

01 McDuffie went off against Providence for 32, including 6-9 from 3.

They have not shot free throws well. 22-45 in two games.
