Methodology Q- I'm guessing that Duke has played considerably more games than we have played in the time period. It looks like that contributed to their "lead" over DC in 3's made. I would guess Belmont has also played more games than DC (but not as many as Duke). Am I wrong in concluding that difference shows in the results? Is their a relatively simple way to take this into account?

Edit: Since '00-'01 Duke has played 648 games. DC has played 581 games. Belmont has played 574 games. I think this methodology is flawed.

You are assuming post-season play was included? I assumed that it was not.

I am assuming Duke had played more regular season games due to early season tournaments, but that's just an assumption and not something I know.

Since '00-'01 Duke has played 648 games. DC has played 581. Belmont has played 574.

The article said Belmont made 9.5 per game. To get their total post season games would count.

Why wouldn't they include post-season games in this analysis? Post-season games are the most important and contested games.

Only to avoid the inequity in statistical comparison that Catnhat mentioned.

If all they were considering was the number of 3 pointers made by each school, they could list that without the formula.

A way to correct for games played and total 3 pointers made would be to calculate the percentage of total points made from 3 pointers for each school. That would "reward" a school for shooting many threes and shooting a better percentage.

All this being said, Duke runs down the floor and jacks up threes very quickly, perhaps because it is hard to teach a complicated offense to a group of student athletes who are together only from late August through late March. If you have a high school All American shoot an open 3 and have 4 more high school All Americans hitting the boards, you're going to score a lot of points.

Davidson had Steph for 3 years, but Duke had Redick for 4.

I hate made up formulas like this. Why assume volume and percentage should be weighed equally? Why use max and min at all? If you were interested in a stat that actually measured something that had meaning, you could try to measure the impact of the three on offensive efficiency and then rank teams by those whose efficiency was boosted the most by the three.

Belmont has made 9.5 3s per game. Duke has made less than 8.1 3s per game. Duke's edge in percentage made (in my mind) is not significant enough to overcome Belmont's advantage in 3s per game.

I once made up a quick parody of the worksheet you use to determine what percentage of your Social Security income is taxable. One line had you to take the first three digits of your Social Security number and multiply by pi. My version was only slightly stranger than the real form and maybe a little more humorous, but gave the same results.

I thought of that when I saw that formula.
