#59 at #66. Fordham is very good, but they have not lived up to preseason expectations, so they will be hungry. After a 0-0 tie with GWU on Wednesday they are in 5th place, and they were supposed to be in 1st. If you come to the Red and Black scrimmage, PLEASE stay for the soccer match, even if you don't like soccer. Sit near someone who really appreciates and understands soccer, like Bill Cobb, and yell loudly, especially during corner kicks. If you have a vuvuzela, bring it. We need this win, and a big, loud, supportive crowd will help.

6:00 PM at Alumni Stadium. Go , Cats!

I sure could use a freebie or two. I dropped to just one Universal ticket and I'm bringing at least one more person with me. So, if you have a Universal ticket and aren't planning to use it for soccer, help me help you to get your ticket scanned. Please.

Ha! I'll be the first to admit I don't understand the game, but I do understand being 4-0 in the A-10!

I'll have you know that I am taking the train to Manchester this morning to see Man City and Burnley.

Two teams run around on a big field kicking a ball. There is this thing called a "goal" and once in a great while the ball goes in it. Eventually one team wins, or they tie.

The ties often come on cold, drizzly nights when I'm wondering why I am still out there. They kick the ball around for two overtime periods of 45 minutes each, so it seems like.

Sitting near knowledgeable fans really does help, even in sports I sort of understand. i77 has sat with me at a couple baseball games. A noted retired sports writer sits close enough at basketball that I can get some good analysis at the half. Hyder downloaded and learned the NCAA rules for women's volleyball, so I can ask him my dumb questions.

Dutch Mietz is an octogenarian avid Davidson soccer fan who I enjoy sitting near at games. (I often sit behind him and his wife at the college symphony concerts, also, and he and I will discuss basketball during intermission.) He is from northwestern NY and played hockey in college. Since soccer is the closest sport to that on campus, he's almost always at the matches and is patient in explaining things to me. DC69 is also good company for soccer, and in general, as you would expect.

Sitting near Ali Mackay and his friends was always fun, for both learning something occasionally and infectious enthusiasm.

Good one-time proximities have included Claire Lennox's dad and a mom of one of the Marist players.

Soccer seems to me to be a game I enjoyed playing much more than I do watching, but I'm over 50 years past my "best by" date for the latter.

The most fun is sitting near parents of players for either team. They are always knowledgeable and very enthusiastic, plus you can get the inside scoop on the players and coaches. I sat next to John Dale's father at a game last year, and he was very pleasant company. I sat near a pod of GWU parents earlier this season, and they were funny, not to mention annoying in a pleasant sort of way. We won on a golden goal, so it was especially rewarding at the end. Meanwhile, there were a bunch of Davidson students on my other side, and they were mostly paying attention to their cell phones.

Thanks for the free tickets. Fordham won it 2-0.

Looked like the ref didn't appreciate the Davidson players helping call the game.

Somebody had given him a bunch of yellow-colored cards that felt he needed to get rid of. I don't know that influenced the game results noticeably.

The Fordham players had heard that a famous producer and director was on campus and wanted to show off their acting skills. I don't know that any Duke basketball scouts were on hand, though.

If it hadn't been for the company, the first half would have been incredibly boring. The second half we just got outplayed. I later heard there seemed to be some interpersonal stuff going on between our guys.

To end my nine hours on campus, I got to see the moon, a binary star system, three stars of different colors next to each other, and Mars after it popped out from the clouds.

The sunset was so lovely that even as we were looking east, the reflection in those clouds was beautiful.
