I was not able to read the entire article, but many articles covering great athletes marvel at how hard they work to get better at their craft.

I can't imagine being the best in the world at anything, but I can imagine that if I was the best, it would be a lot of fun and it wouldn't be "work" to try and stay at that level.

The only thing I "work" at these days is my organ playing. No one would think I was the best even among my Davidson classmates, much less the world. I practice a couple of times a week at DUMC and often work on sections or movements from major works of Bach, Franck, etc., things that I will never play in public at this point in life. That sometimes includes movements from Bach's trio sonatas, when I really am in the mood to drive myself batty (sort of analogous to Curry's drills of bouncing several balls of different sizes if that also involved both feet).

Monday I had taken with me a volume of major works of Bach, but I never opened it. Katie Ann had left the Marcel Dupré collection from which she had played the postlude Sunday. So I had fun reading through most of the pieces and figuring out how to make them sound right on that instrument. And that was fine with me, and nobody else cares or knows the difference.

I think if I were the best organist in the world, however, I would be spending my time pushing that rock farther up the side of the mountain, and a lot of time at that. Even from down here I know what I'd be working to do.

Charlie Scott came on the television this week at lunch. One of the best trial lawyers I know in the southeast started regaling--as trial lawyers are wont-- about Charlie Scott's wheels in Chapel Hill in 1969. The facade.
