2-9 record. Ugh. <But good thing they unceremoniously fired Greg Ashton a couple years ago.> ( ) _________________ "that big jug headed gent can't deal with brooks down low" - Gerdy from Thirty |

Yeah, that personal move has worked well so far...... _________________ "I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter."

I always thought that Coach Ashton's teams gave their best. They won the games they should've won, plus a few of the others. We "fixed" the problem of not enough scholarships by firing a good coach. Bad move at the time, and it looks worse now. I still attend as often as possible, but it isn't good when you hear Davidson students questioning the effort of the team. _________________ "McKillop is a gentleman. What goes around, comes around. Ashton should never been fired. A President that listened too much to parents and players. You are going to have disgruntled parents/players when they don't have the tools to win. Coaching wasn't the issue. |

Such a disappointment from an institution of honor. I can't tell you what a sour taste that firing has put in my mouth as a (formerly very invested, at least emotionally) alumna.

Looking back, I wonder how many times he must have been on the hot seat, and wonder how he avoided having our SoCon "losing problem" get fixed by being sacked. Counting blessings there. _________________ If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. It's the hard that makes it great.

I should qualify my comments above to clarify that I harbor no ill will towards the current coach. My disappointment is directed at the two powers that be who would have been in the position to fire Greg Ashton. _________________ "that big jug headed gent can't deal with brooks down low" - Gerdy from Thirty |

Regarding Dick Cooke: While we were in the SoCon, the fans and administration understood there were many factors working against us. We had very few scholarships, we had strenuous admissions requirements, we had meager facilities, we were the most expensive school, and we were north of most of the schools.
We had never been good in baseball for any extended period. We had good seasons occasionally, but we had never won a conference title nor had we been to the NCAA playoffs until 2017. Dick's teams would break through and have winning seasons from time to time in the SoCon. We were not cellar dwellers on a consistent basis. We won some games against top programs, Miami and Georgia Tech, e.g.
The move to the A10 made us contenders for the conference title. Before we won in 2017, we were the A10 runner-up in 2016.
The other factor that helped us improve was fan involvement. We have one dedicated and knowledgeable insider who has raised and donated money for the program. Effective donations that have enabled us to buy the equipment necessary to to compete.
Dick is respected and known by baseball insiders. He was a coach on the 2000 Olympic team because Tommy Lasorda knew Dick. It also helped that Dick has been visible and accessible around Davidson. If a fan ever had a question about baseball, Dick was easy to find.
He has built a foundation for our program to continue improving. |

A paradox
The last few years this board was a hive of disgruntled football parents, and now everyone seems happy with the result
Apparently this woman’s soccer coach (i am unfamiliar with the backstory) fell victim to the same pressures, but with a less positive outcome _________________ If anyone disagrees with anything I say, I am quite prepared not only to retract it, but also to deny under oath that I ever said it |

A big red flag in FB (to me anyway) was the high number of kids who left the program when the last HC was new. I've heard nothing like that about any other DC coach- including any WSoc coach. |

Not a perfect comparison: Nichols went 7 and 49 and won 1 conference game in 5 years... Ashton had an actual history of decent success. There is a difference between firing Bobby Valentine and firing Mark Richt. |
