Thanks, cc8502!

Happy for Lefty, but it’s still a travesty that it took this long.

Asked this of classmates on social media:

Has any other college coach in any sport ever coached three Rhodes Scholars? Carril maybe?

Ok wizards who are Lefty's two Rhodes at DU? I recall that Wayne Huckel applied, but was not selected, I believe.

Because he coached forever, he coached at an academic place (U of Chicago) for decades, and because he coached more than one sport (he's in the basketball HoF as well as the football one), it's possible Amos Alonzo Stagg had 3 Rhodes Scholars.

It's also possible he had none. I'm just throwing out a name.

Just saw MLC's question. Danny Carrell is the only one I know of, and the only Davidson one Lefty seemed to know of in a conversation we had a few years ago.

The conversation came up because Lefty was complaining that Huckel applied as a NJ resident when Lefty liked his chances better as a NC resident. Why we were on that topic escapes me. Sometimes he pivots in mid-story and you wonder about him until you realize he's actually going somewhere.

Lefty must have counted Wayne then, as he always said that had Huckel applied from NC rather than NJ, where too many overwhelmingly smart people live, he would have made it.

As it took too long for Lefty's HOF admission, the College long ago should have commissioned a statue of the Olde Lefthander doing his patented "Victory Stomp", to be placed near the entrance to the Arener.

More specifically, Lefty mentioned Princeton's presence in NJ as a factor. Apparently, there was another Davidson applicant claiming NC, and Lefty thought Huckel was being unduly unselfish by going the NJ route.

If true, it says nice things about Wayne Huckel.

Wish I could remember how all this came up. Probably something about how he was happy to have had so many smart players.

My roommate sent me this report:

Quote:
I got a special invitation from the Hall of Fame to attend. Apparently Lefty invited members from all of his teams. We had a pretty good crowd from Davidsonâ€"players from before we came, those who were there at the same time we were there, and a couple from after we were there (late Lefty recruits). McKillop and Chris Clunie also attended. Attendees you would remember included Terry Holland, Fred Hetzel, Dick Snyder, Doug Cook, Mike O’Neill, Jerry Kroll, and Mike Dickens. Most of us stayed at a single hotel and ate breakfast and had late evening snacks together. I had forgotten what it felt like to be REALLY shortâ€"I would probably stand up straighter if I was around these guys again all the time. You should have seen me beside Ralph Sampson. The honorees and returning Hall of Fame members were very accessible throughout the event. A very good time.

Lefty has fairly limited mobility now, but he still seems to remember all of us. He used a walker on Friday night and a cane at the ring presentation last night.

If true, it says nice things about Wayne Huckel.

Wayne was in the Class of 1969. Randel Phillips won a Rhodes Scholarship that year.

Heartwarming. I'm so glad he got in while still living. That speech proved his worthiness.

Indeed, most heartwarming. In addition to a great coach, Lefty is a truly amazing husband, family patriarch and non-stop talker. Imagine being married to the old lefthander for sixty-two years, as his wife has been. Mrs. Driesell must be a world class listener, almost saint like. Congrats to the whole family for lives so well lived.
