In '76, VMI defeated Tennessee and DePaul in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Rutgers in the Regional Final. In '97, Chattanooga advanced to the Sweet 16. In '82, Chattanooga won a first round game. Davidson '68 advanced to the Elite Eight.

Those teams should be ranked ahead of a team that lost its first round NCAA game if NCAA success is the criteria.

The value of such lists depends upon the criteria.

On Facebook today, someone referenced a list of the ten best places to retire in NC. I have lived in or very near five of them. They were decent places to live when I was there, and I got to know many friends. Cheap, maybe declining, housing costs seems to have been their major criterion. That would seem to correlate with declining desirability in at least several cases.

Obviously no one would choose Davidson based on cheap housing or low traffic.
