I think that there have been some nice additions to the game day experience at Belk Arener this season. My family's attendance at games has doubled, my wife comes and uses the seat I have purchased for her for 20 years since they now sell beer and she doesn't have one of those damn inconvenient jobs right now.
The beer was a big hit with the UNCC fans, I talked to some whose jaws dropped when they saw me walk into the Arener with a beer.
Also, they let me buy 2 beers even if my wife isn't standing in line with me. Some venues won't do that, so kuddos to them. The lines haven't been bad and while I would rather have a dark beer, the Hop Drop & roll has a nice kick.
Also, the popcorn sold upstairs is actually popped during the game, not trucked in from some foreign land as before.
One thing Davidson might do is advertise that they sell beer.
I have seats around me that are sold and people never come, nice place for me to put my coat, doesn't bother me.
Now if we only had Frisbee catching dogs at halftime, then i would know it was a big game!
Go Cats! |

I brought nine Dorps down from Greensboro on Saturday. JAM2 is two years old. We're in the midst of a losing battle to potty train her. We brought a small pink toilet down to Davidson. I brought it into the Brickhouse pregame. We walked across campus with it. We took pictures.
I went down to gets some tickets at will call, and Mrs. Dorp went in the upper entrance, with both JAMs, a stroller, and the pink potty. She was stopped at the door, as there was a concern that the toilet was going to be used as some sort of prop during the basketball game (taunting of some sort??). A supervisor had to come over and give the ok for the toilet to enter the building. It was stored over with the stroller and not brought into the arena.
This is what we've come to. |
Those pink pottys make props for about anything.. About this time 36 years ago we were the honored parents to be at a baby shower, with the focus of conversation centered around the guacamole dip being served from one such aforementioned training device. |

They were being bused to an away game, but somehow there weren't enough of us and them to warrant separate buses. The players sat up front, and I was a row back. I wasn't listening to them particularly, but a conversation or two of interest caught my ear. I recall a discussion of the difference between "atheist" and "agnostic." |
What did you say, the spelling? |
I didn't say anything. I just overheard a bit of discussion in the row in front of me. If I had heard anything too far off the mark, I doubt I would have interrupted with a Greek lesson or anything. I did wonder how many school's football players would have that sort of discussion on the way to a basketball game.
(I did have a short discussion before practice Sunday night with the student sitting next to me. The word "shtick" was being thrown around and while he knew how we use the word in English, he wondered where it came from. I mentioned it is one of those words that came into English from German via Yiddish. I also mentioned "lox" and "nosh" as two other examples. It turned out that he had spent a semester in Vienna, and so had noshed at the Naschmarkt.) _________________ Μεγάλη ἡμÎÏα εἶναι ΛÏγξ |

Did you hear about the dyslexic, agnostic insomniac?
He lies awake at night wondering if there is a dog. |

It appears that they adjusted the lighting to be perfect for someone working an 8 year old's closeNplay vidcam, but only on the end lines.
I'm delighted.
Other than that, I got nothing, except to say that, if the Cats keep winning all the time, bandwagoners will come and we will welcome them. wftc himself started as a bandwagoner. |

I'm two pages into this thread and remembering... oh, wait, this is our annual "what's wrong with the students?" post.. Folks, Davidson's a demanding place. And, college isn't just about attending sporting events. Do I wish more students would show up? Absolutely. I'd like to see more students feel a sense of school pride and unity through their sports teams... But, having walked a mile or two in their shoes, I completely understand. _________________ 2040. 3rd East. 2nd Center. 4th Little. 302F.

After 41 years as a pediatrician, I won't go near guacamole. I wash my hands immediately if I even touch that stuff. _________________ "We should've thrown our number 7 pitcher against Davidson......" Post by Tar Heel baseball fan 16 minutes into the game. |

OK, the students won't show up; the fan base is a bunch of geezers who won't stand up enough, and now wear caps instead of being frightened away by bright lights into our cataracts.
So you should come up with your desired demographics for fans and market to that group. _________________ Μεγάλη ἡμÎÏα εἶναι ΛÏγξ |

Strange. I thought the thread was about getting more people in the seats. Since Davidson students attend basketball games in much higher percentages than students at just about every other DI school, I can't imagine why any rational person would point the finger at them.
Also, we've gotten comments which point to a lack of resources in the athletic dept for problems with video, etc. More paying customers would seem to be a sound approach to a solution. Since the students don't pay any extra for coming to the game, they wouldn't seem to be a very good source of extra revenue.
Selling more tickets solves lots of problems. Packing the gym helps recruiting. It helps the team play better. Research shows it affects referees. It makes for more fun for the fans. I would suggest that ole DU make it a priority.
There are lots and lots of successful alums who love Davidson hoops and have some experience with business success. Perhaps it might occur to somebody to reach out to a group of them in the area and tap that expertise and volunteer manpower. _________________ "Then they started making 3s. A lot of 3s. I've been a pediatric nurse since 1992. I've seen children with no esophagus after drinking a homemade chemical bomb. I've seen horrific lawnmower and propeller injuries. Six-month old babies who were raped to death. I was there when the family found the child's scalp two days after the doggie ripped it off and brought it in to see if it could be re-attached. I'm sure not scared of an avocado did, training potty or no. _________________ "McKillop is a gentleman. He could have played 'name that score' if he so desired."---St Joe's fan |
