Excellent point. The hope is that a Dayton could continue to hold Miller, VCU a Shaka, and RI a Hurley. But eventually we cannot match the money and support that the right P5 program can. The Beauty of the A-10 is that those guys don’t jump at the first offer. In the SoCon they usually do.

The Consolidation of quality in the power conferences does not have to mean a stranglehold on at large slots. Whether by rule or custom, a team with a losing conference record has no business in the dance. It’s a national championship and a season of futility ought to determine that a team doesn’t belong. And I don’t care if all the metrics (and even a head to head meeting) shows that the 9th team in the ACC is better than a SoCon reg season champ that gets upset in their tournament. All the benefit of the doubt ought to go to a Furman or Belmont. It’s healthier for the sport. And it makes the dance more profitable. A 12 seed Belmont taking Duke to the wire has people crowding into bars to watch. A 12 seed Alabama or Illinois doing so is not nearly as exciting or fun.
