If the Ivies wanted to play us in Davidson, they would come. They don't. When we were in the Colonial/Patriot in the 1980s, we never played Harvard or Yale. We played the scrubs, except for Princeton in '87.
The Ivies play San Diego home and home because the Ivy League schools, the entire school, not just the football team. want to draw students from California. 12% of the US population lives there.
If we can get WCU to play us at Davidson, that would be good because we should draw a decent crowd. VMI won't draw as big a crowd, but we might steal a win. I don't see The Citadel drawing a big crowd or giving us a chance at a win.
About 20 years ago, bagelcat and I went to an Octoberfest Festivat at Rhineland Haus restaurant in Charlotte. The Citadel was having an alumni event there. They had about Bulldog 50 alums. They were nice guys who treated us as alums for the night.
Would Furman or Wofford go home and home with us? Maybe they would if we did the same in men's basketball. |

The Colonial League had nothing to do with the Ivys. That was Bucknell, Colgate, Lehigh, Fordham, and Lafayette back in those days.
The majority of the population now lives in the South, a trip down here would be just as beneficial and cheaper than flying out to CA. This year Columbia plays Marist, Yale plays Mercer, and Harvard played San Diego, and Princeton plays Butler. No reason we should not get some of that action.
The Citadel traveled well back in the late seventies and would be a great regular rival. We were horrible when we played them last but under the new regime we should be competitive. I would rather play them in their stadium vs empty bleachers in Georgetown.
Of course unless you sit in the AD office you don't know how feasible any of this is.
I did hear from a pretty good source that App wanted to pay us to be their patsy for a period of time but we wouldn't bite because we were bad. _________________ "They were energized by this move to the A-10. How could you not be?" McKillop said. "The tree is filled with a lot of presents." |

And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.
And if it was, that’s not a big deal.
And if it is, that’s not my fault.
And if it was, I didn’t mean it.
And if I did…
You deserved it.

A huge part of the reason we joined the Colonial was to play the Ivy League teams. The plan, as sold to Davidson by Chris "Otter" Morris, was the Ivy League would play the Colonial League schools in non-conference play. Each Ivy League team would play 2 Colonial League teams a year. The Ivies would reserve one non-conference game a year to play traditional non-conference rivals. Vic Gatto was hired to help secure games with the Ivy League schools.
Davidson played Penn, Dartmouth, and Princeton at home in the '80s. No one came. There were no teeth in the rules, so we could never get Yale or Harvard to play us or even agree to play us in the future. They preferred to play the northern Colonial schools such as Colgate and Holy Cross. Princeton only came because a Davidson alum underwrote the game and we played them in Memorial Stadium, so they didn't have to leave Charlotte.
I bet that game at Butler includes a basketball series. The Ivy League coaches think Mercer is in Atlanta. The Ivy Leagues can recruit students there, too.
During the Toop, Merritt, and Nichols Eras alumni asked the coaches why we didn't play Ivy League schools. I'm repeating what the coaches and Jim Murphy said. We have a new coach and AD now, so maybe an Ivy League school will agree to play us. |

CityCat: Mea culpa, you dusted off some old memories. I was somewhat active helping Coach Gatto with recruits back in his early days. I do now remember Princeton in Charlotte. I also remember a very well attended SC State game. I think I had become jaded by the time Dartmouth rolled into town.
With all that being true, the population has moved South and I would imagine there are many Ivy alums living down this way now. Maybe with some calls and basketball games, we could get them back on the schedule. I just prefer not to get a steady diet of Campbell and Georgetown. I think it will be great to get Presby on the schedule again as well. _________________ "They were energized by this move to the A-10. How could you not be?" McKillop said.
